Hi All,
After a bit of help, advice, opinion etc regarding deciding on which Nissan Z car to go for.
Want the roadster and it will be a high day and holiday car , looking at approx 2000 per year. Budget is £7,000 - £11,000
From people's experiences what would you choose ?
1. Early 350 Z , I read the DE engine gets slated and drinks oil ? I'll only be doing limited miles and can add the oil. I heard this engine has the low down torque which I like . It's also the only z car I've ever been in. Cheap car tax too
2. A HR engine late 350z . Full fat car tax , is it worth it to gain performance, level of trim, updated car with quirks ironed out ?
3. Stretch myself for a 370 z roadster ? It does look nice , but is it worth the extra cash. Reading the auto reviews, 370z gets a bit slated and 350 z seems to be a celebrated car .
Apologies, as you can tell I am a novice on these cars as my experience is with old classic Triumphs, TVRs Land rovers and the odd porsche.
Many Thanks
Jeremy

I've a 350Z HR so can shed some light for you there. Versus the DE, it's worth the extra - your budget will net you a nice, late, low mileage example which, when judging current prices, will hold it's value better than the DE. The interior is a little better though still very plasticky, the engine noticably more potent compared to the DE/Rev-Up DE than the meagre increase in power would suggest and doesn't generally drink oil.
HR engines, as well as early VQ37VHRs, can have an issue with oil gallery gaskets behind the front cover whereby they blow and oil runs down the front of the engine (behind the cover) back into the sump. You aren't losing oil and can't see any leak, but you do lose oil pressure so watch out for that one on the handy interior pods. IIRC warm idle should see around 30psi, while warm at 2,000rpm should see around 60psi. Anything much less suggests a problem. This isn't an issue on DEs. Fortuantely mine hasn't had this, but you can get replacement gaskets fitted for around £1,000 I think. Nissan don't want to hear about it allegedly.
HRs will spin up to 7,500rpm and all 350Zs have looooong gears. Great for cruising - they really are fantastic mile munchers. If you go to see 2007 '07 plate cars, be aware that this was the crossover for Rev-Up DE and HR - don't be fooled by the hump on the bonnet and assume its an HR as these are often retrofitted. Check for twin throttle bodies otherwise a ne'erdowell may try and pull a fast one offloading a DE as an HR.
I love mine and baby it quite a bit. If your's is a high days and holidays car then you could potentially do what I do and buy a good cover for it and keep it off the road for the winter - saves 6 months worth of tax although they also make good dailies.
IMHO, the HR 350Z is the pick, however that's my preference.
