Subaru Impreza P1- purchase query
Discussion
Hi,
Thinking of buying a P1 for summer. I will only need it from this month to the end of september. Couple of quick questions though,
1) Are these cars pretty reliable, assuming i get an AA inspection, Im not likely to incur engine failures and alike?
2)Do you think a P1 will hold its money pretty well over this period of time. I was thinking of getting one of the cheapest ones in the country?
3) Do you think this is the car to have, I will be loaned up to the high hilts to have about 13k max to spend on the car, cant afford to loose much money on it? (Insurance etc excluded)
Thanks very much.

Its not so much an investment I am after...
Its damage limitation, I reconsise i will loose some money, but limiting that amount is my primary aim.
I can go for unique'ish car like the subaru, or something normal like an exciting Vectra. I just thought i far more likely to save money buying something a bit unique, rather than a 'normal'car.

AA inspection! Bahahahahahaha. *cough*
Sorry about that. But they are a total waste of your time. They can only do a visual check of the engine. So so long as no oil is falling out they'll not say anything about it...
Things the AA missed on my car:
Rear lights had wrong bulbs so brake lights didn't work.
Replacement body panels not fitted correctly.
Overspray on windscreen.
Dodgy spray job on one side.
(They did say the spray job on the other side of the car was satisfoctory...)
Nail in a tyre.
You'd be better saving the £200 and spending it as part of a good service...

Well I had an RAC inspection on my Evo and it was superb. Extremely thorough and didn't miss a thing.
As for the P1's they hold their value better than most cars due to their limited numbers, but I think you'll be paying more than £13k to get a good'un.
AA: Don't bother, they missed the 5th gear problem on my yr2000 Impreza.
Obviously you'll want to join the www.p1woc.co.uk forum and ask there.
Then do a search for '5th gear' on scoobynet, it's a common problem affecting all my2000 cars including the P1.

Subarus around the 99/00 period seem to have taken a bit of a price tumble recently. This could be good for you if it has bottomed out a bit or not if they are still falling. It's a bit like interest rates, you will get plenty of opinion as to what they will be doing in the next few months but no-one will be able to tell you for sure.
I would suggest you might be better off buying the best 'regular' Impreza you can afford than the cheapest special.

My experience is that the "good" specials - P1, 22B etc hold their value much better than the other cars provided they don't have a huge milage put on them.
The engine failure problem on P1s is pretty minor and is caused by a combination of the airflow sensor (a problem on all MY99/00 Imprezas) and the knock correction system employed by Prodrive when they made the P1. (This can be fixed very satisfactorily with an ECUTek Tek3 remap )
