Hi all,

I am looking to sell my 2009 Suzuki Swift and I have no idea how much I should be asking for it. I paid £5000 for it in May 2015. My issue and reason for selling is that it needs a gearbox replacing and I can't afford to do that sadly. How much do you think I can ask for it considering this? There are a few minor dings to the body work but side from the gearbox issue is is mechanically very sound. (As have had no other issues since I have owned it except for things like needs new brakepads/tyres/a new battery last year). There are 73000 on the clock. Someone I know who also had a new gearbox changed recently has questioned whether the car will require a new clutch as well. When I took it to the garage they just said it was the gearbox but they didn't take it apart at all.

Any advice very greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How much will the gearbox problem cost to sort? Take that plus a bit off of the price working ones are going for and that's the price you can ask thumbup

I was quoted about 1500 to get it done, do you think that someone would pay about £1000 for it then?

Thanks for the help smile

It's a difficult one, you may have to sell it as "spares or repairs" as it's unlikely someone will be willing to pay too much for a non working car, if it was something like bodywork but the rest of the car was mechanically sound then it'd be different but I guess they are unable to drive it? Maybe have a look on ebay at completed listings for one as a spares or repair with a similar kind of problem and see what it fetched.

It does still drive although it makes a horrible noise when the engine is turned on. The only issue with it is that it won't go into reverse anymore. I don't know if that makes a difference. Thanks I'll have a look for those

I recently got offered £350 p/x on a sound 2005 5 door 1.5 with 92k.

Ended up selling privately for £1,100.

Mended yours would be worth maybe £1,800 if its a 5 door 1.5. Less for 3 door and 1.3.

I'd get a second opinion on the gearbox as it may just be a clutch issue which would be £300 ish to fix.

Were there any symptoms leading up to the problem?

Eek that is not a lot of money for fully functioning with low miles! Mine is the 5 door 1.3 version. The engine was a lot louder for about 6 months before hand but I didn't worry because there were no issues when I put it through the MOT in November. The first indication I had that something was wrong was when I was trying to reverse into my friend's driveway and it just wouldn't fit the gear at all. Typically it was the day I was going on holiday and I still drove to London and then back to Exeter after my holiday with no issues apart from no reverse.

£1800 is a touch on the low side I think, although £2500 looks to be the max if the gearbox is repaired. If I was in your position, I would stick it on Ebay with a low starting price and no reserve, mark it clearly as spares/repairs and somebody who can source a cheap used gearbox and fix it themselves will buy it.
In my opinion you will fetch around £1000 or maybe more doing this.

I am a bit afraid that if I do that though that I will end up with someone buying it for £20!

£2,500 is dealer money not private.

He'll not get £1k for it with an unknown gearbox fault.

All IMO of course but I have just sold a 1.5 5 door albeit 2005 and 92k so know what people are willing to pay.

Yeah fair enough, £2500 would be a bit optimistic. I still think it will make a bag on Ebay though, OP please can you get it listed so we can settle this?! wink
