Mazda Diesel Engine woes
Discussion
Following issues with my car I thought I'd start a thread to see if others had the same problems and to warn others.
There are two weaknesses affecting Mazda 2.2D engines fitted in a number of models over the last 10 years.
Any shared experiences?

- Interrupted DPF regens dumping fuel into the engine oil. This can be mitigated by keeping an eye on oil levels and my doing regular oil changes...certainly more frequently that the 12,500 miles on the service schedule.
- Leaking injector seals. This is a less well known issue and potentially catastrophic. There is a common problem that the injector seals (copper washers) fail causing combustion gases to enter the engine causing a carbon build up in the oil. In time the debris collects in the sump and blocks the strainer that sits before the oil pump pick up pipe. This causes oil starvation to the engine and subsequent seizing of the engine and a £8,000 repair bill. This problem can happen regardless of oil change history. I believe Mazda have now added the replacement of the injector seals as part of the 75k service, however, the problem can occur at significantly lower miles. I would recommend anyone with a diesel Mazda to get the seals replaced asap, cost should be a couple of hours labour plus £5 for the parts, an inspection of the strainer would also be a good idea.
Any shared experiences?
I had a 59 registered 2.2D Mazda 6.
Ran motorway miles - 35 miles each way commute.
At approx 65k miles DPF became a constant issue, limp mode engaging regularly.
Can't remember the exact costs - but replacement DPF and associated sensors were coming at a high enough quote to force me to get rid of it.
Put me off Mazda to be honest, although I'm sure petrol variants are good cars.
