Lexus RX300 vs RX350

Has anyone had longterm experience of both to give me an opinion on whether it would be worth paying the premium for the 350 over the 300?
Is the extra power of the 350 a necessity if outright speed isn't a requirement? Are there any other differences between the two which would make one better to own than the other? I know that the 350's engine is chain as oppose to belt driven, is it the better one to go for purely based on this?
I have only managed to veiw a group of 300's at the same garage so far and the salesman made a couple of questionable statements about the 350 which I'd like a second opinion on. Official stats state that the 350 is the most economical but he disputes this saying that in the real world the 300 is. He also claims that the 350 has problems with the headgasket so he won't buy them anymore. Is there any truth in this? I can't find anything online to back this up.
