Hi All hoping I can pick some brains here.

My trusty Vectra has come to an uneconomical end so on the look for a new reliable commuter. I'm sort of set on a Mazda 6 but am nervous about going for a diesel again.

Commute about 260 miles a week, mostly 50/60mph on A/B roads.
Budget £6000 max. This will get me an 09ish car with 50-60k.

Question is:
- Petrol or Diesel
- Are they reliable
- Any what to look for when buying advice

Help appreciated.

We have a late 2008 2.0 petrol estate, which I purchased recently in preference to a 2.2D. The 2.0 petrol is pretty bombproof but the 2.2D is known to have reliability issues - a stretched timing chain being one of them. On a long motorway cruise we get 40+mpg so not too bad. Through the gears on country roads, it's a bit thirstier. Handling wise, the 6 is a great steer - you won't regret it. Just do the normal checks (esp for rust and electrics).

Thanks. Always like to hear from someone who owns one. Glad to hear they are reliable as many niggling but expensive problems with diesels in the past has me nervous about buying another one!
