which 5k jap coupe
Discussion
Now that uni is almost over, i will be able to finaly get rid of the 306 i have and will have 4-5k to spend on its faster replacement.
I haven't just limited myself to just jap cars i just want a quick rwd coupe but for the money theres not much other choice.
I've been thinking of getting a 300zxTT, 200sx or MR2 Turbo
I've manged to get decent quotes on all of these cars (1-1.5k which i don't think is too bad considing i'm 21)
so if you had the choice which one would you go for or are some obvious choices i've missed?

MR2 Turbo if you want a quick Q-car that most people will underestimate.
200sx if you want to get into drifting, or have a lot of fun sideways at roundabouts.
300zx if you want to look like a fat, past-it American.
You'd be lucky to get an Integra type R or a supra non-turbo for 4-5k though, and if you did they'd be a bit ropey. You might be able to get an RX7 for that money, but it might be hard to find a good one, not RWD but still a lot of fun would be a Subaru WRX.

No good then?

But take the point on the Tegs, thought they would be cheaper by now.
Mitsubishi 3000 GT, wouldn't want to have to repair it mind and similar image prob to 300zx.
I almost got an RX7 instead of the Griff, lovely cars.

The 3000GT made it into the book of "Crap Cars."
Apparently it's a bit bland.
Fast though, no doubt. Sounds mean too, and I personally think they look nice, if a little dated in a chestwing/medallian combo kind of way.
RX7s...
Still thinking about one myself!

I think the rx7 and supra are still abit out of price range. I like scoobies but round here they seem to have replaced the escort rs as chav chariot of choice.
I did think about a skyline gts untill looked at insurance
HOW MUCH!
I guess it really is between the 200sx and mr2 I've always like the mr2 but the 200sx is the more pratical and more driftable but its a close call and will probably come down to which ones are for sale when I go looking in a month or so
But I always thought the 300 was good bang for buck but a bit lardy but you guys really don't rate it all ?

I'm with the MR2 tubby side... driven in a few (not owned one yet )... but I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
In addition the aftermarket is amazing for them, and you can get them looking stunning (or bland if you want a dark-horse...)
I don't usually suggest a brand/website, but i've been getting some good insurance figures from the confused.com website - makes life quite easy!

It's a great car, but a 5K one will probably go wrong and give you a bill for 5K.....
Agreed, nothing at all wrong with a cared for example, lot of dogs out there too.

He's right ya know.
Here lots of tales like this.
However, spend more on a good one and its more than likely going to be fine.
Same theory for all cars really.
I rate 200SXs very highly though.
Good buyers guide on th S14a in Practical Performance car this month.
Interesting to note that the lardier looking s14 is actually lighter than the S13.

Driftable- seriously, where are you going to 'drift' it?
I hope to take my next car trackdays whenever I can, either car would make a good trackday car but I'd be able to take the 200 to drifting events aswell
UK drifting is starting to grow and theres plenty of drifting trackdays around now
(plus theres theres plenty of big roundabouts nearby)
I drive an S14 200Sx. Plenty power, lots of fun throwing the back-end out but a bit bland looking. You could get a good one with your budget.
I also have a MK1 MR2 - well below your budget, again great fun drifting the back end out but down on power. However, that may help on insurance and it does get far more admiring looks than the 200sx. Personally I think it looks better than the Mk2 although a turbo version of the latter would be nice and quick.
I just bought a broken Mits GTO to add to my collection but not driven yet (anyone got a spare turbo engine or manual gearbox)? It was too cheap to resist but I'm not sure I'll like. It looks great but heavy and 4WD so may not be so much fun. If not then it can be my winter car as the other two are hopeless in the snow and I live quite far North.
