Did Mazda ever sort out the 6's rust issue?

Just had swmbo's 53 p!ate rust out at the sills so we're looking for a replacement. The problem is that it suited her very well, was utterly reliable and they're cheap as chips* and fairly common near us.
Hence the question... I'm looking at the last of that generation 57 plate.

I'm not sure about the later models the one's I've seen have all been fine, mine's almost dead by rust in the same area which is a shame because since 2008 and a shedload of miles, apart from service items, it's only needed a front spring replaced.
My Dad has a 2010 model, there's no problems with that shape at all rust wise and the build is very similar, although they do suffer from drivers seat issues apparently.
They're a very underrated car (petrol ones, diesels maybe not so good), I've just chucked a set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on ours and the car seems to drive much better on them than the previous Pirelli Cinturato's which didn't age or wear all that well.

Just seen this thread. I have a facelift Gen 1 Mazda 6 and apparently they fixed the sub-frame issue on the 2005 onward models...BUT mine still has rusty inner rear arches. Its always lived fairly near the sea, Sussex for the previous 6 years and 3 years with me.
The rust on mine is fairly cosmetic, certainly no worse than an E46 BMW of the same period. I've never seen a rusty Mk2. I think by 2007 and the Mk2, they'd fixed the rust....its funny how Mazda gets such a lot of coverage for its rust issues, but everyone glosses over the rust that BMWs of the same era suffered with!

I have 07 plate 2.0 petrol estate. 4 yrs in and no tin worm yet. The interior is not up to German standards - rattles and squeaks aplenty. The headlights are cr*p.
But it is comfortable, roomy and has been the most reliable car I have ever had, bar none. Also one of the cheapest to run. Not a bad steer either.
It will not make your heart beat faster but they are v good value for money.

Engine is a bit gutless, but what a reliable car if you avoid the troublesome diesels. I bought mine at 91,000 miles 3 years ago and now on 127,000. Only mechanical failure during that time, a slightly dodgy thermostat. Oil consumption has barely changed during that time, less than a litre per 10,0000. Compare that to my VW Passat 1.8t, which became a right pain in the ar** over 100,000 miles! Also agree they steer well. Bit too much body lean in the turns for my liking, but very nimble and pointy. Loves a windy road.
Under-rated cars IMO. The Ford Mondeo of the same vintage got rave reviews, but I think a petrol one of these is a better drive. Better brakes certainly and you don't need to drop the sub-frame to do the clutch.
Agree with what's been said, FWIW I'm now 600 or so miles into the Rainsport 3's and they really are well suited to the 6, came in at £68 each fitted and balanced. Headlights are dire but the high beam is actually quite good. bulbs are a pain to change though ,well not the bulbs but the bloody plastic covers.
There's also an abundance of spares on ebay, when the Mrs dented the door I managed to get one the same colour with all the gubbins, delivered for around £70.

I've a 2014 6 estate and the paint is the main thing that lets it down.
Very thin, and hence hugely susceptible to chips and scratches. I'm trying to keep on top of any chips quickly as was bought with the intention of keeping it for 8 + years by which point I hope I'll no longer need a family wagon.
Otherwise been utterly faultless since new. First car I've run privately for over 12 years and all my company cars over that period required things sorting under warranty. (VW, Audi, Skoda and Ford). The Ford lived up to it's acronym nickname as it required AA recovery 3 times in its first 18 months and 30k miles.

The car I've seen has an advisory on its 2018 MOT (which doesn't showup again on its May 2019 MOT) for surface rust on the front subframe. Maybe it's been recalled and treated, maybe it's still a bit rusty...

Could be covered in black gunk(waxoil) take a look for yourself and try get it on a ramp, if your concerned.
Else if it has been recalled they’ll be a paper trail from Mazda
