2. For £3500 you'll be looking at a rev 1 or a rev 2. personally I'd go for the Rev 2, handles much better.
FWIW mine cost me £2850 at the end of the day, inc him getting loads of work done to it first. Mine was cheap, he needed to sell - but as you know I've had a few problems - nothing major really (although Pwig likes to take the micky) just niggly things. Whatever you do, don't buy one with an oil leak!

btw insurance for me (23, 1yr NCB, FC = £1360 through Adrian Flux, with mods declared) and fuel economy (!) = 23mpg at best. (managed 230 miles to a tank at best, 145 miles at worst.)

Agree with all of the above.
My rear caliper siezed and almost cost a grand to replace (pad had worn to nothing and scored the disc too)!!! Lucky we managed to free it up (after applying lots of heat and getting very heavy with a large hammer) and it's been fine since.
T-Bars are nice in good weather but can feel quite flimsy if you're really going for it (I mean sudden, fairly sharp steering inputs at highish speed). They make the car feel a bit lardy, actually (MR2s aren't as light as you might think). If I had a choice, I would go for a 'proper' roof these days.
F1s are, in my experience, the best tyres to have on a MR2. They don't grip as much as some other tyres but they're more then sufficient and they're communicative too. Michellin Pilots are OK but they don't last that long... Have to admit I haven't tried Proxies. Can't imagine they'd last as long as the Goodyears.
Contrary to popular belief, handling is fantastic. Turn-in is instant and slides are surprisingly progressive when provoked deliberately... Of course weight transition can catch you out from time to time when you're doing some serious cornering, but that's part of the fun!
