Hi, just wondering - how much would it cost to fix a Mark 1 85 spec MR2 with a tank that leaks when over half full? Needs two answers though - a) if the tank has a hole, and b) if theres leaky pipe work.

Actually in addition - you know the front bumper strut tends to rust away - how much roughly does that cost to repair?

Cheers people

Front bumper strut is not structural, however the number plate and towing eye attach to it. You dont need one to pass an MOT. I am going to replace mine soon however, apparently you just fabricate a new one out of box section.

As for the tank, I have it on good authority that it is a bastard to get out without dropping the engine but it can be done and it should not be a problem to get another from the scrapyard. While you have the tank out check the heater pipes, they have a tendancy to spring leaks around the welded mountings.

Hi Bob.

Just saw this post and couldn't help recognising your name from ebay. Sorry I outbid you on the MKI in Rushden. It is going to need a fair bit of work doing to it to get it through an MOT itself.

I wasn't going to bid more than £250 on it after viewing it, but then I decided to increase the budget due to a small pay rise. After winning the bidding I realised the car had to be trailered from the owners house as was completely out of coolant and oil (am expecting the worst). It will also need new front wings and possibly bumper and air dam.

Pics and other details can be found here (if you're interested):

TBH, I think you may get yourself a better deal on the one in Bedford

Well i'm glad you saved me the hassle mate. Thanks! I was thinking it's probably best to not go on the cheap side actually and get one which will cause less hassle. Who knows, I may even just bail it and get a Mk2 tubby!!
