They say 17's for go, 18's for show. That extra rotational mass further from the centre can make a difference to performance, and the smaller sidewalls will make the ride harsher and could make for less progressive breakaway. You generally have less choice of tyres, and they will be more expensive.
But they (usually) look better
I'm thinking of upgrading my alloys and haven't decided which size to go for, I'm leaning towards 17's as they still look better and shouldn't affect the car too much.

If we had super smooth french roads then 18" for sure...
Should be fine, that is the same size tyre as the front of the noble and the wifes Golf has them all round too, 40 isn't a stupidly small profile for that width and the oz wheels should be plenty strong.
