Thinking of getting a sportscar and toying with either getting a Mitsubishi GTO or RX8?

GTO Ive been after for ages (but never seen a good one), RX8 I've only recently considered but they seem to be good value.

Any thoughts in terms of how fun they are to drive and reliability?

If not one of these 2, any other thoughts on reliable and fun Jap performance up to £4k?

Thanks!

I think you've highlighted the problem with GTO's, there are very few good ones. Apparently heavy and complicated means £££'s to run.

RX-8's are well documented on here so I'd read those threads, but you have an ideal budget for one iirc as you can buy them cheap and pay for an engine rebuild in your budget.

I'd be looking at non-turbo 300ZX's, Supra's and Skyline's (though the latter might feel abit flat) for that budget. If you hunt hard enough you might be able to get a mk3 Supra with the 7M engine which are quite fun/cool, but make sure it's had it's head torque'd up correctly otherwise they are worse for HGF than the K-Series!

What about a DC2 Integra? or an Impreza, both will come in your budget and be (especially the DC2) great to drive.

That's what I'm doing, mine is being built at the moment. Already have another one with a fresh engine. Great to drive, good on track, all the fuel and oil consumption are well documented and exaggerated. Our rx8 uses more oil that my 5 series diesel by a long way but costs less in oil as the oil is so cheap.

I'd rather have an rx8 that one of the big cruisers like the 300, gto or the supra although a manual supra turbo would be something I wouldn't kick out of bed but it's not in your budget.

I currently use my RX8 PZ for sprints and track days.

It handles extremely well and feels worth so much more than the £2500 i paid for it. As previous posters have said there are many threads on the pros and cons of owning one. I will say that when i purchased my one (14 months ago) i had the engine compression tested and it was below mazda spec (6.7) so by the book needed a rebuild, but as others can tell you it pulls ok starts both hot and cold and is a class winning can in competition.

I recently had another compression test done and the look of horror on the guys face when he saw the results was funny, i am now in the low 5's but the car still feels like it did the day i collected it. I was told by the specialist that i shouldn't get hung up on numbers and that i should enjoy the car.

Once it starts playing up i will definitely be having a rebuild and will look forward to the 2 year warranty as piece of mind.

Go and drive one, you will not be disappointed.

The PZ version has uprated Bilstien dampers and eibach springs which makes a huge difference over stock.

Yep I'm warming to the idea of the RX8 - seems a heck of a lot of car for the money!

Being the proud owner of a gto I can confirm that they are expensive to keep on the road, hard to find local people to work on them, extremely thirsty and in general a bloody nuisance!
However, its fun to drive, it's not a sports car, more of a grand tourer. It always gets looks, I think its a very pretty car.
Reminds me I ought to try and get it back on the road after being parked up for the last 2 years with various faults!

But its nice to look at!
