Mate had a very sporty looking 2 door (i think) Celica
in early 80's quite compact, very powerfull, at time
twin headlamp rear chrome bumper turned upwards at each end, around rear lights, any photo's or sites i might find one at?

That'd be the Celica.

My mum had one in the early 80's

Could be a Celica-Supra I suppose.

Right googled it to a german web-site, and it actually looks pretty tame in the cold morning light,
more like a scaled down mustang or something, it is a celica though

Right back now, well i've just had another
squinty-eyed peek, at photo, and i sp'ose Mustang, yeah OK, given the Japanese (such a cruel race) idea of copying western stereotypes.
Mustang/E-type etc, those design cues, are there in the Celica, of its day,
