Hi guys,

Thinking out loud and browsing the Japanese car sales and I'm just wondering what people experiences are on importing cars. I enquired about a car which cost $4070/£2600(ish).

I asked for a rough OTR cost, received a reply saying it'll be around £6000 on the road. Would £3400 really be the cost to import a car and register it? With tax etc.

Reading up on driftworks some of the guys seem to quote a lot less money!

Thanks

I'm in the process of importing one. A purchase price of £3800 in japan became £7000 by the time all the fees, shipping, taxes and registration were added.

That was with a "sole trader" guy as opposed to one of the well known big importers like Torque GT or SVA.

Taxes are about 30% for a start. Shipping something like £700.

What are you importing? If you don't mind, and who are you using? Thanks

It's a 2002 Civic Type R - it's expensive because it's only done 35k miles.

Both myself and the importer are up in North East Scotland though, so unlikely to be any use to you. He's good though because I got an invoice that breaks down every component of the costs. Never seen that before. His fee is £550 ish, Jap agent fee £600 etc....

My Skyline was £6700 all in, the costs at the auction were about £2500 but I don't have an exact figure as I used Torque GT who were very good. When I had a look around it worked out as a UK Skyline +£1,000, which I thought was reasonable for import/dvla/mot etc

Good luck whichever route you choose smile

Have been importing since '97 and have done all sorts. Feel free to PM me for my phone number so I can talk you through. Total price will depend on lots of things including of course who you buy it through and where it is bought in Japan. Taxes will be 10% duty and 20% VAT both compounded on the cost of the car + shipping. Inland transport in Japan and the UK can be quite dear. Depending on the age of the car you may have additional UK side costs.
