My understanding of it has always been that the RX8 engine consists of two rotas of around 650cc each and that this engine came in 192 ps and 231 ps states of tune.

I have seen a couple advertised saying that the engine capacity is a 2.6 on some versions - namely to 231 ps - with 2 x 1.3 rotas.

Have they misunderstood, or have I misunderstood?

You're both right. Effectively, (in simple terms) the rotary engine works (combusts) twice as fast as a conventional piston engine so while they displace 1.3L, when you compare them to a 'normal' engine they're displacing 2.6L in the same time.

The British Government cottoned on to this in the mid 90s, so some RX7s (like mine) are registered and taxed as a 1.3L, with the later models and RX8s being taxed/registered as 2.6Ls.]

Right, I see.

The only reason I ask is for the purposes of the MSA, and what class I will get put into if I go with an RX8.

I think most series have different rules for rotaries and forced induction. I have found some to say that rotary engines are 40% increase on their given CC, so a 1.3 13B engine becomes 1.8 for the class.

For the purposes of hillclimbing, the MSA treat rotary engines as 1.5 multiplier...I just want to know whether it is 1.3 or 2.6 I am multiplying by 1.5! I presume 1.3?

I would assume so, otherwise it would be a double-handicap. Your best bet is to ask them.
