My mate is thinking of getting a twin turbo mkiv.

Someone told him that the turbos need replacing every 40k. Aparently they are about £1300.00 each.

I thought 40k is a bit low for a turbo to go.

Has anyone else heard of this, as this is the only thing putting him off getting one.

No, that guestimation for the turbo's is way way low. There are several cars I know if with original turbos above the 100k mile mark. My car has done 50k and still going strong. The figure I have heard a couple of times is more around 80k miles.

There is a UK car knocking around with 300K on the clock still with the original turbo's and engine. It's all matter of how they are looked after.

Turbos are usually rebuilt when they are worn out not thrown away and replaced at great cost

The person who made that statement doesn't know that they are talking about.

A good little resource for how to look after your turbo's. Im sure there is a lot more but its at least a start:

Thanks for the advice guys.

I thought 40k seemed very low.

My mkiii had a new one at about 67k, but that was due to the head gasket going and taking most of the engine with it (turbo & crankshaft). Mines now on 133k.
