Want to buy my first Skyline... but exhaust...
Discussion
Hi all
I am looking at buying a REAL car, instead of the 2000cc BMW I have at the moment.
I went to test drive a 1997 GTST earlier today, and while it needs some TLC it is resonably priced at £3k. The only trouble is:
a) It's automatic. It's not something I really want, but I can live with that, at least until I get the funds to convert it.
b) The exhaust is ludicrous. It must be 3 inhes wide and its the only modification done to the car at all. It sound wonderful on the outside, but inside it is so loud that hurts yor ears, it kind of resonates to the point it blocks anything else out.
So I have a couple of questions. Is it possible its just something vibrating that's loose? Or is it just because the exhaust is so ridiculously big? I haven't driven a car with an exhaust anything like that bore before. Also, is there anything that can be done to reduce the noise other than replacing the exhaust outright with a smaller one? Because that is some way out of my budget at this point in time.
Thanks guys

Check the area near the exhaust tip. You may see a little hole. This is where you'd be able to fit a screw to secure an exhaust bung. http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll206/ellisgran...
PS Had an M reg auto GTS-T a few years ago. Great car - reliable workhorse, suitably different, would have strangers coming up and asking me questions about it. I didn't have a loud exhaust either - can't remember the make but it was only slightly louder than standard.

Forgive my ignorance, but that's the mufffler tip, right? And the flared bit is where it attaches to the exhaust? The one I looked at earlier didnt seem to have a box, just one long pipe to around halfway along the car, where there was a section about a foot long that I would guess is the cat converter.

just get a smaller exhaust. look for a stock one, or even put an ad up on driftworks, or a skyline forum for a swap.

This may be a way forward.
I found the skyline forum amazing (though I can't remember which one it was) when I needed to get my old GTST through an MOT.Someone leant me a stock exhaust to get is through. I preferred the sound with it stock, however mine had stage1 mods, so needed the aftermarket exhaust for it's tuning.
I'm signed up to www.skyline-owners-club.com and they are friendly bunch, there are other clubs available. Would recommend getting onto one of these as they are a great place to get knowledge/parts. You might find getting a quiet aftermarket exhaust quite cheap if you don't want to go as quiet as standard. A little hint, the "skyline tax" is only on the unique and hard to get items much like any other car of this era.
I have a manual R33 GTS-T spec 1 from 1993, and apart from some 1990's aftermarket speakers it's comepletely stock including the exhaust and it really makes a difference! Went to a local gathering and I started mine after the other guys and I had to check it was on!
Here's my example of a stock exhaust:
shameless pics of the car;

Is it normal for a car with an exhaust bore that large to make that much noise inside the cab though? I mean, at 3k rpm it actually resonates to the point you can feel inside your skull.
I am kinda hoping that it is just a loose bracket or something, so it's not too difficult to adjust. This is the car in question. Excuse the terrible lighting in the pictures, I didn't take it...

I don't own the car yet, and it's a 1 1/2 hour drive from me. I didn't get a repsonse from my post earlier in this thread about where to find it, can you tell me where the guy needs to look?
Oh, yes, it goes right in the end.http://i.ytimg.com/vi/oHyw7MJ1mmU/maxresdefault.jp...

Oooooohhh I see what you mean, so this whole section in red is the bung? That screw hole is just how it attaches?
I wouldn't have thought that would make much difference to the sound in the cab though...
It goes inside as well, not just a disk at the tip. Look at the previous pic I posted.I wouldn't have thought that would make much difference to the sound in the cab though...
I think it would be an idea to attend a local Skyline meet before buying one.
