Not a clue- Danboy has one on his n/a MR2, so may be of some help....
I've just found out I've got a drilled airbox- what/why i have no idea....
Porsche pal had that.. think it's simply extra air in

I always thought it was done by barryboys just to make it sound good.
When i did it on the beemer it sounded good, but actually lost me bottom end torque, so I taped it up again

I always thought it was done as a cheap, sorry, more cost effective way of getting more air in. Even though its then got to get thru the highly restrictive standard filter. Unless a K&N panel filter was fitted, I could never really see the point.
As for the sqealing MR2 filter, I have no idea. Unfortunatly I sold the standard airbox system last week, but I would suggest getting one and trying that. Not much help I know, but it might be worth a look.

could be the sound of the turbo as that is more noticeable with an aftermarket airfilter.
I dont know how to break this to you....ummm....theres no turbo on the mk1 mr2. This ones not even a supercharger...
We can always have a poke at it on sunday if your coming to the Oxford meet?
Oh and have you checked for mice?
Oh I dont mind the noise.. rather like it actually. Careful use of the throttle maintains the squeal from behind. Which is nice.
Hoping to pop over on Sunday however we're looking after a neighbours dog this weekend and there's NO WAY I'm sticking that old fleabag in my nice new 2. Will see how it goies.. maybe just a quick pint (its not too far away)
Ah,..apparently one should oil the K&N filter every year.. anyone know anything about this practice ?

RE: oiling air filters.
Usually done after a clean,(wash with degreaser/detergent inwardsthen flush,so that any debris is not sucked back in again).Dry some where warm overnight, then you'll need to get some light airfilter oil,K&N do refils, coat the filter on the outside & wipe off excess. Its just an added barrier to catch dust particles really.

serves me right for not checking profile. i assumed anyone who talks about their MR2 on PH has a Mk 2 turbo for some reason
These things will get you about 5bhp on a mark 1 assuming it has a cold feed. Barry boys tend to fit them then leave them in the engine bay, sucking in warm air and reducing power.
Mark 1 MR2s have an air filter in the boot, then plumbing to take the air around the outside of the boot to the other side where the air intake is. It is no suprise that making a shortcut helps a little.

Emgine bay usually quite cool at speed.
And I have a turbo and chargecooler. So I'm hugely more dependant on I/C performance.

Yup mines got a fat pipe that ends up pointing at the filter, about 12" away. This mines whatever's in the boot, if it's all there, is redundant ?
