The latest installment in the GT4 problem page.

My car has decided it would rather idle at 1500rpm then the normal 900ish. And it doesn't want to boost fully.

When at idle, the boost gauge sits at the 2nd marker below 0, normally, and will happily boost to beyond the last marker on full throttle.

But now, it sits at the first marker on negative side at idle, and wont boost above the first marker on positive pressure (if any of that makes sense!!)

When running with the bonnet up, there is a hissing noise that wasn't there before, and it "fizzles" (for want of a better word) out when the engine is cut off.

Anyone got any ideas?

Fatboy reckons it could be a split hose somewhere, but I cant see any. And the hissing noise seems to be coming from the inlet side of the engine.
Any suggestions, gratefully received.

I have had another look (although it is completely dark now!) and it sounds like the hissing is coming from quite far down behind the injectors.

Is it likely to get worse?

Whatever is hissing isn't likely to split completely and render the car useless?

I have it booked in at Toyauto Centre (GT4 specialists)Monday morning, to get the fuel economy problem looked at. But its a 1.5 hr drive there, and I need it to be able to make it, as its my daily drive, and I dont have another day off till next monday!

Ok Turbo-tastic, salvation IS at hand, dont panic!

The leak is very likely (in fact ill bet on it) to be located on the end of one of two steel pipes that run down the back of the engine on the left side (looking from the front at the engine); the cambelt end.

The pipes are part of the speed sensitive power steering that arent used on certain import models and are blanked off with two push-on rubber plugs that split and allow just the symptoms youve described to occur, i should know it happened in just the same manner on mine.

It may be possible for you to gain acces to them by removing the drivers front wheel and looking up through the aperture where the steering arms pass thru the body to the struts.
Yous SHOULD be able to see the two pipes terminating in a couple of rubber blanks. You can lay odds on it that the leak is there.

I nearly made a mistake when i first had these symptoms arise as if you spray carb cleaner/brake spary down the back/onto the manifold area, the revs will rise indicating a manifold gasket leak, however its not the source of the problem.

Cheers for the advice (and telling me not to panic!)
Ian at Toyauto has sorted it.

In the past, the car had had an aftermarket boost gauge fitted, and then removed by a complete bodger!
The person had screwed a bolt down the end of one of the vacuum hoses, and the jubilee clipped it in place. Within 10 mins, Ian had found and sorted it. Job done.

And the broken head stud that Toyota wanted to fix for me, whilst leaving them a blank cheque?
Turns out my car has the wrong exhuast manifold on it. Again, Ian sourced the problem within minutes. Top bloke, highly recommended for Toyota related problems.

Main dealer servicing and repair? Cowboys & conartists.

Once again, cheers everyone for the help, I can now get back to looking at Turbo upgrades, whereas before, I was looking at replacement cars!!

Ian is a god when it comes to these things.

He once diagnosed a cambelt that was too tight from 350 miles over the phone.

Its quite reasurring to go to a garage that has nothing but GT4's in it.
And one whose directions actually lead you right to the door (assuming you read them correctly!).
Including the petrol, its still cheaper for me to take my car to Ian, then it is to travel a 3/4 mile down the road to Toyota.
Plus, he has suggested that while the car is in the air, he can de-cat, fit an EBC etc.

Its not too bad for me. Close enough not to be a pain when I need to get there, but far enough away so I dont end up going every week with more bits.
