Double Din Head units
Discussion
Hi All.
Well, another year, and a problem already.
My headunit (Radio/cassette/cd) has decided it definatley doesn't want to play cd's anymore.
Because its a double depth unit, I can either replace it with some ghastly silver thing with a massive screen or get a blanking plate to cover up half of it, and use a normal single depth unit.
I would prefer to keep the standard one, as it doesn't look out of place, shouting "Break the window & steal ME".
I spoke to Toyota (my 1st mistake), who suggested I could purchase a new unit, at £1700 (!!!!) or get mine repaired.
But in order to get a quote to repair it, they want £86 to remove and post the unit to an independant company.
Does anyone here know anyone who is able to fix headunits?
As if I can get it to them, I would be able to save myself £86, plus Toyota's commission (500,000%?)
Cheers All,
Ed

I'd look for a good ICE fitter near you.
For instance I used www.soundgallery.co.uk/html/in-car.html
The sort of place you can walk into and say what you want, and they'll tell you how much without taking the p1ss like main dealers.

Hi Ed
Tricky one. It sounds as though you may have a problem with your laser and these days it is often cheaper just to buy a new unit than try to get one fixed. Sony are certainly shagging the competition right now by flooding the market with ridiculously cheap units.
It is hard (impossible?) to get double din after-market units so you may be forced down the single unit route anyway if you want to avoid the Toyota charges.
If you want to keep tape and CD you would need 2 units anyway so would need a radio/cassette and a separate CD slave unit. This would still be a lot cheaper than a double din unit. Alternatively you could get a radio/cassette, blank off the other half and then get a CD changer for the boot. The downside of this is the additional wiring and loss of some boot space. As you have the double din slot it makes sense to use it for everything.
I know what you mean about the security issue but you might like to try the same thing that I did.
My MR2 has a double din socket but was fitted with a single din radio/cassette and a blanking plate. I removed the blanking plate and installed a Kenwood Stealth head unit beneath the existing unit using the existing wiring connections. The Stealth has a rotating front panel that automatically closes up when the ignition is switched off. When the car is parked up it therefore looks as though it only has a dirt cheap factory radio cassette fitted which isn't a hot theft target. Switch the ignition on and the proper unit rotates into place.
If this sounds feasible to you then I am sure you must know someone with an old r/c head unit lying around that you could slot into place as your dummy unit.
Have a look on the internet for better prices for decent equipment as the Sony stuff isn't great but their ridiculous prices are forcing everyone else to be more competitive.

Is it actually badged as a Toyota unit? or some other obscure Jap brand? Most of those wierd Jap brands are usually re-badged by well known makes,i.e. the Nissan 'AddZest'brand units are all made by Clarion & an identical clarion unit can be bought here & swapped out.Clarion make D/Din units for the UK market too.
T-Boys is probably right about the laser,-easier to replace than repair.

Have you tried eBay?
I've had a look. There tends to be a few for the newer shape Celica (ST205), but I have been informed that these wont fit mine (ST185), due to the different centre console(?). Whether this is true or not, I dont know. But the bloke that told me was the bloke selling it, so I cant imagine why he would talk himself out of a sale.
Anyway, I have just come back from holiday, and my car is booked in to have a boost leak (see previous topic's) sorted, so funds are pretty tight. I think I will just have to live with a tape player for now.
Then there's the new bathroom suite....

Gaz if it's up,you have winXP yes? we can do a remote connection.I'll use the 'power of broadband' to grab 'em straight off your hard drive. We'd best use a real-time messaging service to communicate tho, like MSN or Yahoo.-If it comes to that.
