Impreza engines:
Discussion
Right, a slightly odd question for Jap Chat, but I think I'll get a better response here than in the Kit Car forum. Basically, me and a mate are looking to build a kit car this year (MK Engineering GTR if anyones interested), and are going through various engine options. One thats come up is an Impreza engine, so I was wondering if some of you lot know a company that sells Scooby engines. We don't need the gearbox, which I'm hoping will cut down costs. Needs to be a turbo engine as well.

Sort of Radical style track car but nowhere near as expensive. In standard 215bhp form it'll have more than enough power. The car is mid-engined. It's just one of several options we're looking at

Good points Gaz,but if you think the imprezza engine is pretty enclosed in its 'natural state' anyway.Work arounds & some ingenious(sp?) routing of airflow etc ought to do-able without too many probs.
Good torque potential would make scooby unit a good choice, imo.
Does it have to be a scooby unit because of size restrictions?

No apparentley if we wanted we can get anything upto and including a rover V8 in the back, Supra and other straight 6's may well be a no-no though
200SX Motor came up in conversation in the pub last night which is worthy of investigation!
Thanks

I think for starters whatever engine we use will be left pretty much stock. I'd already planned to put the intercooler for a scooby engine up in the airbox, since from what I've seen that's there just for show. Radiator shouldn't be a problem, plenty of room in the front. The VAG 1.8 turbo engine is the first choice, since we know that will come attached to/will fit the gearbox we need to use. I was just trying to come up with alernatives that might be cheaper, or offer more power and torque for similar money.
Cheers Craig, reminds me to have a look on SXOC for an engine!

www.apiengines.com/ Try these guys. I know a reasonable number of MK1 MR2's driving around with engines supplied by this lot. And they appear to have a whole scooby section.

scoobs have big mouth bumpers, and a tonking great big scoop on the bonnet.
I think we'll just have to agree to differ there mate To my way of thinking a horizontal I/C need more/direct/stronger airflow than a traditional front mounted vertical type,Thermal & flow dynamics & all that chuff. It always amazes me that subaru can get away with it so well.Tho I probably am over paranoid about cooling issues
The suggestion to use Niss 200 SX (RB 18/20) engines is also worthy.Good power/torque increase potential for a fairly low budget, also pretty damn reliable & bomb-proof.Iirc they would be heavier than a scooby unit tho.The guys at sxoc can give you best info.

It's probably going to be cheaper to tune it before it's installed (you aren't fitting anything twice).
Do you have to run a cat? if not, go de-cat as it helps combat turbo-lag. Might be worth getting a Motec ECU in the first place, so you have options later on???
We do legally have to run a cat, to pass SVA. However, as soon as we leave the test station, it'll be removed. Tuttle, 200SX engines seems to be going for fairly silly money (£1,000 for an engine with 74K on the clock on SXOC). Any ideas of API's prices?
