I know there are lots of threads on this but this one is slightly unusual.

My father in law is a non UK resident and owns a Ferrari that is over 10 years old in Japan. He is not using it there and wants to ship it to the UK so we can use it and he can use it when he comes over. Questions as follows please:

1. If it stays registered in his name is there any VAT or duty to pay in the UK?
2. Can it stay on Japanese number plates if used for less than 6 months of the year?
3. Can it be registered with UK plates and him remaining the registered keeper as a non UK resident and what would the VAT and import duty implications be?
4. If it is registered in my name are there any other implications?
5. Any recommendations on a car import company that may be able to help?

Many thanks for you help.

1. If it stays registered in his name is there any VAT or duty to pay in the UK?

Technically yes, based on the declared value of the car. Duty - 10%, VAT at 20% Customs aren't stupid either, so a £ 1k Ferrari will be investigated.

2. Can it stay on Japanese number plates if used for less than 6 months of the year?

I understand foreign registered vehicles can be imported for up to 6 months. Longer than that, they'll need to be crushed, exported or registered in the UK.

3. Can it be registered with UK plates and him remaining the registered keeper as a non UK resident and what would the VAT and import duty implications be?

Yes, as per 1. He would have to use your address to receive documentation.

4. If it is registered in my name are there any other implications?

You'll be the registered keeper and get all the main concerning the car, and a duty to ensure its taxed, mot'd and insured.
