today's little episode....

Was having a nice drive around the countryside when the orange engine light lights up. Kill engine, pull over, car in cloud of steam. I let it cool for a while then take filler cup off. Coolant system erupts & does a volcano impression all over back of car (washed him this morning too). Went to nearby house & stuck couple of jugs of water in , just to get me home (2 miles). Noticed the hot liquid that shot everywhere was rather brown.. do we all agree that it needs a good flush & re-fill with nice new coolant ?

cheers all!

Been having my own fun. Replaced the cap on the expansion tank, discovered I had no coolant in the system. Purchased 1 bottle forlife. Filled. Located leak. Spent next three days arranging to get it looked at and plugged.

My coolant system does have rust in it, and was flushed fairly recently. I think that rust is just a bugger to get out of the pipes

When mine blew up I took the head off the engine. A lot of the waterways in the block were blocked with big chunks of rust. (Probably why the head warped...).

If the coolant is brown rather than red it definately needs changing. But get it done by someone who knows the coolant system. There's a drain for the rad, drains in the pipes under the car and a drain on the engine. When I opened the pipes under the car big lumps came out, didn't look like they had been opened in years and years.

Not a good weekend

1. had to get the plumber in quick £££

2. Mr2 trouble resolved. After 250 miles of ownership, the head gasket's gone. £££ .
Wonderful.

I've dumped it at the local garage.. they're pretty steady mechanics & given my a price that sounded about right.

If the quote to fix is much over £1000 you might be better off with a replacement engine. sadako went down this route, so he can probably advise if thats a good plan or not... Hope it all works out well

OK on my n/a mark 1 I prop knew about it was steam billowing out of the cowling, pulled over. Arranged a tow. Got it to my local guy who then told me there was more exhaust coming out of the filler cap than out of the exhaust. The engine had admittedly made wierd squeeky sounds on warmup but I thought this was a dodgy belt somewhere or something that needed oiling that I couldnt find. Was told the head was almost certainly warped considering the head hasekt had been replaced 9 months previously buy the previous owner. Garage who did the original work wouldnt talk to me and they were too far away to get the car to.

Did some research, Could not find a replacement cylinder head as they are in short supply. New ones cost a fortune. API offer an entire japanese imported engine, that they have tested and cleaned, for £550 inc vat and delivery, fitting is £250-300 from a toyota specialist in Arundel (Paul Woods offers the same thing). Back on the road for just over a grand, and put new life into an old spirit.

The engine I recieved has a blue cap but no idea if it is pre or post revision. I Never saw it before it was fitted and dont know how many ribs it has. Either way, its all good.

Back on the road now. Couple of hundred £s worth of bits, 9 hours labour. Straight on the credit card, naturally.
