with a little one on the way and with more hobbies than I can count weekends mean the car is no longer big enough. I'm looking for something comfy and fast and fun for the weekend commutes into the woods or the coast, big enough for a tall driver, 4x4 for the mud and driving position and with plenty of space. I don't want something expensive to fix, so the v10 Touareg is probably out... Although that's what I'd like, so I was looking at a Nissan Munro or a Subaru Forester xt turbo and wondered what your thoughts may be? Many thanks!

I would have thought a Forester would be the only choice, Short of buying a Rav4 and fiting a 3SGTE into it.

Do you mean Nissan Murano? If so, some folk also look at Mazda CX-7s when considering the Nissans.

CX-7s can be had for around £5k now - 2.3T 260bhp fun (I bought one earlier this year!).

Also depends on gearbox and size preferences. Nissan Murano is auto-only whereas Mazda CX-7 2.3 DISI Turbo is manual-only. Forrester is a smaller car compared to Murano and CX-7.

Also, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US tested the mid-size SUVs and found that the Murano is the safest of the nine tested and safer than the CX-7. Forrester not included in the test because it is a small-size SUV. I put my family in the Murano because 1) it is the safest in the mid-size SUV price bracket, 2) the wife wants an automatic, and 3) fuel cost is not an issue to us.

Bear in mind that the 3.5 V6 in the Murano will be more thirsty than both the small capacity turbos of Forrester or CX-7, especially if the car spends a lot of time in stop-start traffic like school-runs or sits in central London traffic. Also, Murano does not have the turbo push (mid-range torque) and won't be as easy to tune like the turbocharged Mazda or Subaru.
