Happy New Year to all.
Currently driving around in a 94 Golf and quite fancy changing it sometime in the next couple of months. (Funds permitting!)
The problem is i'm doing about 24,000 miles per year but that will change for a year when I go back to uni in Sept and my mileage should come right down again.
The Mk1 MR2 seems like a good introduction to something sporty, but what are they like as everyday cars? (60mile round trip to work).
If they break do they cost a fortune to fix? What sort of price am I looking at to get a "good" one.
Cheers!
Phill

EdT has just bought a beauty- can't remember how much he paid- but you get what you pay for.

check the for sale forums.
I'll help you look in a bit.
Cheers mate.
Also look here.

An imported engine with warrenty is around £600+ fitting.
Assuming it's been looked after the main issue with MK1's is rust. You should be able to read up on all the common rust areas on the owners club website. But basically it's the rear wings, wheel arches, and the structure behind the bumpers.

Going to have a good read up on all the problems. What are they like with to live with as an everyday car?
Are they expensive on parts? I'm guessing servicing might be a bit more considering where the engine and how difficult it is to get to but are they reliable?
I've only had my G plate Mk1 for a few weeks now, but a good while back had a virtually identical car (F plate) as my only car. Had for about 2 years & was pretty much bullet proof - only prob was the rad was (and is) rather exposed & not well protected from big stones hence needed 2 fixes in quick succession. Will look at fixing this flaw with my 2nd one (with some fencing wire or similar I expect). Oh the other problem was a farmer's son driving his Dads van into it at speed.

oh btw had it serviced ('A' service - little one) by my local garage as soon as I got it home.. it was due one plus wanted it checked over). Bill was £110, not too painful, glad to say

That seems faily reasonable. Can you work on them yourself or is it just too fiddly?

I put oil in the engine, air in the tyres, and the rest I get done by somebody who knows what he's doing.
Although the engine's over the rear wheels, access is OK I'd say.

Cheers Edt,
Haven't seen you since the summer! Did you manage to find a house to buy in the end?
We'll have to arrange another PH Meet at some point.
Finally one more question! How much does it cost to fill up and how many miles do you get out of a tank?

Will let you know when I do!
yup we bought a house 200 yards away from that Cherry Tree pub .. most convenient! (where we had that PH evening last summer- that's why had to sell the big Griff)

I'll have to come over a meet up for a beer! That was a very nice pub.
I'll gladly show you 'Nips' next time you're passing, and take you for a spin if you want. Price = 1 pint, naturally (after!)

Sounds like a good deal to me!
I had a MR2 for 6 years. After 120k miles the only thing that broke was a water pump.
Doesn't cost much to fill it up, as it has a small tank!
I've been tempted to get one again, as they are so cheap now, and cheap to run, well compared to what I have now, and can be raced in their own series.

I had an MR2 for about 6 months as a daily drive. Absolutley no problems. Great fun, but can prove annoying with only having 2 seats (depends what you need it for).
As an introduction to sporty cars, I would recommend nothing else.
Sounds good to me. I've got my eye on my mates brothers car and if I wait until June i'll have another years NCD which should help with the insurance.
