ITR... Or MR2 T... Or Something Else?
Discussion
I'll be happy with a Rev 3 MRT but ideally I'd like something a bit different.
And I've always been drawn to 'Teggys. Have actually seen two in the last two days which is rather unusual... They're FWD though. And I like the idea of being pushed round corners, not pulled. Hmmmmmmm.
And turbos are cool.
I wanna spend in the region of 8k (but obviously, the less the better).
Hence the previous mentioning of RX7s and such like, but I can't be arsed with thinking about the running costs any more.

Dont worry about the FWD. I could get mine to over steer on demand in fact it is the best handling car I have driven. Some of the speeds I entetered corners at were indecent. Grip is fantastic and the LSD is fantastic once you learn to keep your foot on the power.
Dont forget the TEG has no torque so Torque steer isnt a problem
steering was like wielding a surgens scalpel loved the steering and the brakes put my new cars to shame. Probably the best brakes of any car I have driven as well.
Now the reason I sold mine. Much as I loved thrashing its tits off everywhere It gets pretty tireing. And too adictive. That car turned me into a menace driving like a dick everywhere. Don't think I changed gear at under 8.5 in the year I had it. Oh And I was only getting 15-20 MPG.
Havnt driven a MR2 Turbo but I have been in one and it was great. Differnt type of car though.
Best thing to do is drive one, But I warn you. if you do not change gear at over 7k revs you will be dissapointed. It realy does take a long time for its talents to shine through. If you are used to lots of torque it will probaly take months until you get the idea of the car.
Have fun

I don't get this, why settle for a Rev3? If you are spending 8k on the Honda, then spend 8k on a Rev4 MR2 GT/T turbo (possible even a Rev5 GTS at the price braket).
Compare like for like ££££'s wise.
Modifications, my friend - Engine, exhaust, and most definitely brakes. And probably more.

In what way is it different? I guess the MRT is less feelsome (I have always felt slightly detached with my MR2) and pretty torquey in comparison - I currently drive a naturally aspirated MR2 and it's a bit of a torquless wonder below 4000 RPM, and have to admit I do find it annoying sometimes. But then in my opinion the MR2 turbo is the car the n/a MR2 always wanted to be - It pulls hard at pretty much any engine speed in any gear, whereas my car only comes close to that same level of acceleration at 4500RPM in 2nd!
Have always had a thing for Teggys though - Went out for a blast in one last year, at about this point in the year and it was great - The noise was great, the acceleration was great once you wound it up too. And the general feeling you get from driving it is quite different to anything else I've encountered.
Bearing in mind that I do suffer a bit with the lack of torque from the MR2 sometimes, do you think I might potentially find the Honda to be a bit of a pain? I think sometimes the fact that I really only have in the region of 2500 revs (4500-7000) to play with in the MR2 might be a factor.

Hard to say because different people drive in different ways. The MR2 Turbo I was a passenger in was very fast but the guy drove more point and squirt. he was slow around the corners. I would have eaten him for breakfast in the Teg on a twisty road or race track.
youve driven one and you liked it. I would put money on you liking it even more once you learned its characteristics after a few months.
as for the Engine one of its biggest strenghs and weaknesses IMO. If that makes sence.
I think I would still have mine if it had a differnt engine.
Having said that because it only has 190 ish BHP and thats all at top revs and not a lot of torque the power dosnt really overwhelm the chasis. I imagine in a MR2 Turbo you would have to be carefull with teh throttle. you dont really in a Teg. Its reluctance to understeer is pretty amazing. And evn if you do push it too far the LSD pretty much takes care of it.
there are a lot of cars out there for 8k ish that would be great.
GT4,RX7,Teg,MR2 T, M3 etc. you can't really loose.
whilst I cant compare the teg and those others because I havnt driven them I can tell you that a Teg is a drivers car and its fantastic.
not biased at all mr fible eh?
get a GT4 they still look great and have around 240bhp standard IIRC.
this one looks nice.

thats down to the drivers then isnt it when the tubbies step out they _really_ step out and if not caught quick enough farmers will present said drivers insurance company a bill from haskins.
still wouldnt mind driving a teggy at one point because i am a fan of honda's lovely ability to rev high.
Dan, I live near Godalming and have a 'Teg (complete with brand new gearbox ), if you fancy a ride sometime.
It's true what other posters have said; it takes a while for the 'Teg to get under your skin, and it can be tiring when you're not in the mood. But on the right road (or track), on the right day...

Am I blind, or has nobody mentioned a Subaru?
I had a ride out the other day in an import my mate bought. Very Fast Indeed.
300bhp @ 1bar boost, switchable to 2bar for even more.
Don't knock the ITR on account of FWD - one of THE all time great handling cars and possibly the best handling FWD car ever. A proper, truly focused drivers car thats great out of the box.
Find a good one now and run it for 6 months, if you don't like then just tick it off on the list of been there done that and move on. At least worth a go.

Ive got an ITR, and its one of the best cars Ive ever owned.
My other car is a 996 GT3 and whilst that is in a different league, its amazing how I enjoy the ITR almost as much. Ive always had 911s so I wasnt sure about getting a fwd car, but on the road and especially the track it really handles like rwd. Big very controllable oversteer slides are really easy to induce and make you feel like a hero.
The ITR is my everyday car, but I like it so much Im using it for every other track day alternating with the GT3. (plus its cheaper to run!)
