lalst question for today (probably.. unless I cant sleep which isnt rare these days .. so tired...)

My car has a K&N air filter - nice. Question is the air intake pipe, which I assume used to be connected with the OEM filter box, is now sitting there, totally open ended. Should this have a fine cover to stop nasties getting in ?

I think I know what you mean. I looked at one with an after market induction kit fitted. There was an open hole in a pipe that looked like it was attached to the OEM air box. I cant say if it's the correct way for things to be though.....

Check out this page for lots of answers to things.

Pics of my open pipe...

Seems odd that it's not covered at all (the more air the better of course, but shouldnt it have a fine cover ?)Ed

My air feed on my MR2 is like that.

Don't think it's supposed to be, but I don't give a sh*t.

That open pipe- it isn't a direct air feed pipe is it? Where's the other end?

That's the question. It used to be connected to the OEM air filter; this was upgraded to the K&N filter that is pictured. All seems to work fine but the fact that it's totally open surprises me

Total guess, but I think that pipe goes to the air intake grill on the wing- if that's the case, it's quite a good idea, the cone is getting cooler air, as it gets hot under the engine lid.

Mine pokes out through the vent in the passenger side rear panel, theoretically sending cool air aloing the hose and towards the air filter.

Problem is, the hose has a habit of coming unsecured and tends to move around a bit.

Dunno why people bother with air filters without proper headshields really, but they make a nice sound.

Does the 2 need 'specialist' servicing or simple enough for a general, decent mechanic? In the old days I took my one to Toyota, Henley, cost a bit though.

YUP! itsa cold air feed,& thats exactly what it says on the tin!.Feeds cooler air from outside the car to your air filter.Unless you do a lot of desert driving I shouldn't worry about dirt/stuff coming up it,- your air filter will deal with any stray particles
