MR2 mk1 chassis
Discussion
Japchat buddies.. I shall be posting a volume of questions over the next few months no doubt (since getting my MR2 yesterday). Any responses greatly appreciated !
Firstly, having come from TVR ownership, I'm used to spending my Xmas break under a car with wires brushes & tines of waxoyl gloop to protect the chassis for another year. Much to the missus' annoyance.
Are we of the opinion that the 2 should be looked after in the same way?
thanks

The real rust areas are the rear wings and the strut behind the front bumper (MOT failure i believe).
For the rear wings have a look in the boot. Lift up the carpet at the sides and get your hand into the cavity down there. If it's full of water and mushyrust your gonna have problems in a bit. There is a rubber bung in the bottom of that cavity, you can remove that (if it's still there) and the water will drain out.

Waxoyl is a good plan in any event. Mk1s are known to get a bit of rust in the floor pan. Real biggie is the wheel arches. Rust is starting to come through on mine, will have to wait till the summer before I can do anything about it.
I did some research (and refreshed my memory) about Mk1 likely problems.. the arches is a popular one. The previous oweners have looked after this little car very well. The last owner cleaned out the arches with a stiff brush. result - no rust on arches! (yet at least) I shall try my best to keep this good practice up.
