Right so found an abandoned 1992 rx7 that was imported in 2004 and been off the road since 2009. Been told it has broken gear box also no keys as owner has passed away. Its red and the paint is very bad. interior is mouldy right so my questions are as follows.

-Cost of new locks ignition barrel.

-Cost of new (second hand) gearbox seems to be about £200 is this right?

-what do you think the car is worth seen ones in good condition on ebay for £5000 upwards but seeing as this ones in such bad condtion I am not sure what its worth

I want it to tinker with something to keep me occupied learn make mistakes I have a very short period in which to make an offer on it so any help would be appreciated.

A replacement gearbox won't be huge money, a few hundred quid, depending on the history, easy to source as well.

I'd guess new locks and keys should be somewhere north of £300, I was quoted nearly £200 from Mazda in 2008 for a new set of door locks without the boot lock and keys.

Dependant on the condition of the body and interior, and assuming there won't be a compression test, I'd offer between 1 and 2k. If you got a compression test done and results were good, I'd offer around 3k if I could do the rest of the car at home and not pay for cleaning, bodywork repairs, etc.

For a standard car, I probably wouldn't go higher than 3k based on your description. Signficantly less if the engine wasn't checked out. It really depends on the condition of the rest of the car though.

5 years is a fair amount of time for the car to be off the road, so if it's been stored outside you might also have to factor in things like new tyres, discs, pads etc. The engine is the key-stone really of whether it's worth anything, do you know if it runs?

These cars can be very temperamental; I stored mine (a working car but with some over-fuelling issues) for 6 months while I was deployed and came back to a car that over-pressurised, over-heated and then within two days blew a hole in the side of the radiator (ended up being coolant seal failure), so the car is now (still) sat in need of an engine rebuild.

As a project and something to fill your time with, I'd say go for it. As something to fix up and sell for a profit, I'd be careful. Prices of FDs are on the up and hopefully they'll go the way of Skylines (no reason why they shouldn't, I was told there are now less than 600 RX7s of any generation on UK roads), but you could end up with a money-pit that you'll only fall in love with if you drive it.
