For the last year i have been running a '91 plate Mx5 eunos 1.6.

The car has been used for auto tests, Solos and sprints. It has been very competitive bagging me a few trophies along the way.

My problem is that i want something else that handles just as well and is a bit quicker. This is where the RX8 (231bhp) comes into the equation.

I am due to look at an '04 plate with full mazda history and only 66K on the clock.

Whats the general consensus? i think the RX would be great but cant find out until i actually compete in it.

Does anyone have any first hand experience of doing this swap.

Thanks in advance

Ask on the RX8 owners club or the Mazda Rotary Club, plenty of people have done it. Steve at MX5 Motors in Doncaster deals with both and posts on there.

Up to you, really.

I'd think:

More expensive than an MR2 Mk2
Slower than a MR2 Mk2 turbo
Heavier than an MR2
Thirstier than a Mk2 turbo

On t'other hand, it's a lot newer and still has the engine in the wrong place (like the Eunos).

Bigger boot than the MR2, too!

Thanks guys,

Went to see another one yesterday. Full history, reasonably clean with just a couple of small marks, drove very nicely and all was going well.

About to start the deal and tried to fire it up after being sat there for 5 mins.........guess what its got the hot start problem.

Absolutely gutted. Still there are plenty more to see, its just a shame they are all up north.

Edit: It took me almost a year to find an Evo as clean as it should be. wink

Take it the seller kept quiet on that one, in the hope he could have mugged you off? Did the immortal line come out "hmm never done that before mate".

Was probably also down on power, though that's harder to notice.

No, surprisingly the dealer just said "OH". I then explained the reason why they do that.

Just found out another car i was going to see this weekend has been taken off of Autotrader so probably sold.

Never mind.

So I've narrowed it down to a 04-07 brilliant black or tungsten grey 231bhp model. Gonna keep looking.

Thanks for all the input guys

Really glad you knew about the warm start test - bullet dodged!

Have you considered buying a known duffer and getting a warrantied rebuild (and maybe a cheeky bit of porting)?

Yeah, i did consider that but i don't have much time as it is so want the least hassle.

Street porting does sound a nice little mod though

I would love to have a ride in one that has had it done. Does it really make a difference?

I'm told it does, but haven't tried one.

I reckon it would be fairly easy to source a broken one and get a specialist to rebuild it.

Just had mine ported and a toyo box added, defo a bit livelier. My advice is buy one that needs the engine doing paying no more than 1k..there are loads on eBay. Then when rebuilt and ported you will have a quick, good handling car for circa 3.5k.

Every dealer in the land knows why they do that. That is why the car auctions always have a handful of RX8's going through every time because dealers want nothing to do with them, but will take them in part ex as long as the price is low enough to recover at auction.

Slower in what respect? The RX-8 is just as quick as an E46 M3 around Top Gear's track. they are all about the handling not straight-line speed.

Plus MR2s are ugly and who cares about MPG? wink

More Expensive? 2K for an engine rebuild with 2 year warranty doesn't seem expensive to me...

You can buy a pretty decent MR2 turbo for 2k. MR2 turbo is quicker top end and 0-60. My guess is that one would be quicker round Top Gear's (rather silly) track too. For RX8 handling, see the other post with one wrapped neatly round a lamp post. If you've got to buy petrol, you care about the price. RX8 is, aesthetically, a series of clever gimmicks strung together -- as a styling exercise, it doesn't work very well.

Very nice. Apart from the higher tax on cars of that age, the PZ is the pick of the S1 cars.

Yes, because that generation of MR2 is well known for its benign and forgiving handling, has very good modern electronic stability control and has never ever been wrapped round a tree by an inexperienced driver rolleyes
