We both have 2 large cars, S max and large 4X4. And it's time the wife's car is upgraded. We don't need the huge 7 seats of the S max.

She does not do huge miles per year. We are not on the look out for Eco second car (even though every car dealer try's for the hard sale on Eco st box)

I love the looks of the GT86. We both want(and the wife wink ) a fun second car. Something that is bought because you want it (heart telling you). And no because it ticks all the practicable boxes. Like the S max did. But was no fun

So we looked at a local dealer and the 2 things the wife was not 100% sure of was the boot size and rear leg room. But after seeing it she was surprised it was better than she thought.
We both want the GT86. And have narrowed it down to Orange or Blue. I love the orange.

But before we look at just 1 car and get it, I wanted to look at a few other makes to see if their are any alternatives to the GT86. She will not buy the first car we see, nor will I

Budget: 22-23k
no more than a Year old.
needs 4 seats

Needs to be fun.
I hate to say it but we are looking at a Kia pro Cee'd GT. I know it does not have the street cred or will hold it's value like the 86.

Thoughts and suggestion.

An idea to suggest to the wife to look at also

Anything Jap wise that is close to the 86 wise on the market. I know Honda have the Civic Type R. new one out next year but expect it's going to be above my price range

I know I'll be eternally unpopular for this, but I really don't like the GT86/BRZ. Each to their own though, so no offence if you own & cherish one.
My sister recently took delivery of the Subaru derivative after trading in her pristine, last-off-the-line R3 Mazda RX8, and I can't think of anything I've ever been so underwhelmed by. Obviously she was pleased as punch so I put on a show of appreciation for her, but I honestly think she's dropped a right clanger in getting rid of the RX8 in favour of the BRZ. It just felt so tacky inside with its bare plastic and minimalism, and I was disappointed in the seeming lack of urgency from the engine. Granted, I'm looking at it coming from the driving seat of a couple of properly quick cars, but it really does seem like a dud.

There. I've said it.

As for other options, with that budget and those requirements you're looking at the cars mentioned above, Mini Coopers and Astra VXRs. You'd also land a nice Infiniti G37 Coupe/Cabrio if something a bit left-field is required.

I think you'll struggle to find anything to meet those criteria for the price.
With your budget you may even get a new one according to a thread I saw earlier (I see you've spotted it too wink)
I had a TVR Griffith and Nissan 350Z before this and will happily concede that the Toyota has less power and has to be worked to get any kind of 'performance' - but that's the point. I did a review not long after I bought it somewhere - I'll try to find it and post a link.

ETA: click.

The late noughties supersaloons are in budget, so e92 M3, RS4, C3 AMG etc.

Older 997s are in budget I think as well.

But that's ignoring your 1 year old rule (just a thought...)

Id say GT86 as the rival such as m235i are about 10k out of budget new.

Get it in blue, I'm with your wife on that one!

Any particular reason why it has to be less than 1 year old?

You can get some very quick German machinery with change for a warranty fund for that kind of money.

Or get dozens of decent Japanese cars over 10 years old that will be a lot cheaper to run than any new German machinery wink

Because we always buy nearly new, and I would rather have something in the manufactures warranty for peace of mind,

And as was posted about for the money I have no found much out that looks as good or fun for the money.

And to add to the list RWD is a preferred. Why I have not been looking at many FWD Hot hatches

My fav with the blue a close second.

But talking to a chap who works for Toyota who said the paint was easily marked on the blue 86 and the orange has not been popular. Which for me makes it stand out more and a better buy. I hope

We've got a black GT86 and a John Cooper Works mini between us. Both meet your criteria, both a hoot to drive, rarely a fight over car keys in our house. biggrin

Timely bump. wink

How'd it go OP? Still keen or was the test drive less than you'd hoped for?
