I suppose this is what happens when you buy a cheap car.

Driving home this evening, after about 10 mins of driving the yellow warning light in the corner below the handbrake light - came on. "Oh bugger" thought i.

Now this lights looks a little like a gearbox, but the car was running fine and the changes normal.

I planned to limp hme and then ask the question on here, but then after about a minuite, the light went out again, never to return.

So what does this light mean? I'd guess at the gearbox being a little low on oil? Will this be ok till it gets serviced properly on the 8th?

My handbrake light kept doing that when I first got mine.

Turns out my handbrake light is also my brake fluid level warning light.

I topped up by about, oooh, a few drops, and the light stayed out for good.

You probably are just a little low...

Consider yourself lucky - Since I've had my clutch changed I've had a leaking gearbox! I swear you can't get anything fixed at a garage these days without them ing something else up in its place.

You don't think I shoul be overly concerned then? The car will be getting fully serviced a week on wednesday.

I'm just a little nervous about everything as its my first "high performance" car, and I want to look after it!

So, in conclusion, it'll be fine to leave it til next week?

Been out again tonight and the light stayed off.

I wonder why I put "High Performance" in quotations? I've discovered its quicker than most things!

Well obviously there is an element of risk to just leaving the problem which you take at your discretion, but if it is related to fluid levels I think that (going by my own experience of MR2s) you should be OK to leave it until it gets the once over.

I have a slow MR2 without a turbo though so it probably doesn't consume fluids as quickly as yours will...

I would love a car that could hit 100 in less than 15 seconds but I can't get insured on most things and I already have an MR2 so I don't find the prospect of another one (albeit with a turbo) as exciting as perhaps I should!

Well, I'm only 23 (just) with 1 year NCB, and its costing me £1360 through Adrian Flux, fully comp.

I'm quite happy with that.

21 next month for me!

I pay £1080 on my G Limited, which I suppose isn't too bad seeing as it's an import, and my second year's NCB comes up in July (D'oh! Ages away)!

I love the MR2 but my problem is that I'd like something a little bit different next time around, whether it be a standard car or a modified one. The trouble with that is complications with insurance.

What did you have before the Mister Two?

Check your codes mate.

I'd guess it was something transient, but I'd make damn sure.

I can tell you how to do it on a Four, but I don't know where the bits are on a Two. Your local friendly MR2 club should know.

Were you on full throttle at the time?

Hmmm.

Pull the engine codes.
If it was my car, I'd bet the farm on a Code 54 (low IC fluid warning).

You don't have one of them, so I'm not sure what it could be. If the engine management light is off, I'd suggest you were cool.

So its def the "engine management" light? Nothing to do with the gearbox at all? (Looked like a g/box to me!)

While the lights off, I'll not panic, and get it sorted next week.

Thanks guys

Engine management light IMO. You'll almost certainly have a stored code.

I'm sure the IMOC can tell you how to read it (usually requires 30 seconds and a bit of wire to bridge a couple of terminals.

Amber light with G/box icon, should be engine management, will often include engine & g/box sensors as well. One of the sensors may have packed up,or need a clean, could try giving the connectors/cables a quick clean/check.

Engine management light. It'll be silly code.

If it comes on and stays on, you've got a problem.
