I'd be very surprised if the emissions are ever going to be good enough to see another rotary in a mass production car.
My street-ported RX8 engine sits in my MX5 and gets ~235bhp from 1.3L (no forced induction). The proposed 16x should be able to get to 300bhp naturally aspirated, 500bhp with a turbo.
But who puts up with 20-25mpg and enough CO2 to kill a squirrel at 50 paces other than a few enthusiasts?

I agree. I miss my RX8s. Rotary engines are a bit marmite but I stand firmly on the "love them to bits" side of the divide.
Me too. There are rumours of plans for a new RX-7 based on the next generation MX-5 platform.

I won't hold my breath. Even if it happens, I won't be surprised if it doesn't come to CO2 obsessed Europe at all.

I'm sure I read somewhere that for given certain rpm & load, rotaries are more efficient than piston engines. The idea being, a constant-speed rotary engine charging batteries for an electric RX7.Not quite true to the DNA of the RXs, but could be interesting.

I think the rotary will be back one day, but produced in small numbers at a higher cost as opposed the the bargain RX-8 marketed to everyone with a license.
That's the only model I can see making the numbers work.If I had my way, the next RX-7 would be something along the lines of the Alfa 4C in construction and weight (i.e. a strict two seater, under 1000kg, lots of composites) styled like the Mazda Furai concept and packaged so tightly that nothing but a rotary will fit in it.

I'd love to see a rotary powered Atom too! Twin Turbo's and all!
