My MR2 has 6.5j wheels all around.
225 section wheels wont fit safely on them.
If anyone hears or has any 7j all around or staggered fitment wheels that can be sold please let me know.
I also want to stick to 15" wheels because the tyres are show cheap it makes me grin (can buy a full set for the price of one rear for my old car)

Standard MR2 wheels are also fine.
Got my eye on a set of Wolfrace ProLite 2.0 in 7j
Are they any good?

I was offered a set of 16s but for some reason i have a mental block against upping the wheel size.
Cost of tyres is part of that block.
Sorry, thanks anyway.

Do your best to get a staggered set. There is a reason the stock Toyota ones are. smile
The choice of tyres for OEM 15" wheels is a bit limited. Please don't fit budget rubber on a MR2!

Im not going to fit budget rubber! Ive fitted Toyo R1-Rs on the front, can you get any less budgety?
Surely staggered wheels isnt important, its the staggered tyres that matter?

My tire fitter can only get Nexen's in 15" for the MR2, he told me I'd be better off switching to 16's since I'd have a much wider choice and it's going to get increasingly difficult for him to source 15" tires in the future. Is all/any of this true?

Like OP, I'm sticking to the standard, staggered tire sizes though. Would be interested to know what brands still produce this size tire.

Toyo make both T1-r and R1-r in the correct size.

Speak to James at JDModified in Basingstoke he has a nice selection of MR2 based stuff some 2nd hand. I think he may even have a set of original Mk2 wheels from a V6 MR2 breaker in at the moment.

Ill also add, i keep looking at the standard mk2 wheels. But they look really old fashion, which is why i settled on the wolfrace ones.

There are some really lovely aftermarket wheels on the used market for mk2's. Check the classifieds on imoc and mr2oc before buying those wheels in the basket.

IMHO Standard wheels do handle the best. especially when wrapped in Toyo T1-Rs just the right amount of comfort and grip.

As for alloys They are the same fitment as skyline and supra but any bigger than 16 you are going to really affect your ride.

Contact James Mean aka Cardhore. He seems to specialise in mr2 wheels and I actually bought mine from him after he refurbed them.

I am sure he can sort you out with some nice wheels.

FWIW, I had standard alloys on mine for about 8 months with Toyos front and rear. It wasn't for me. Much too soft in the corners. Made the handling predictable though, which is probably a good thing. The 17's i have now are very hard but make the car feel so planted.

I don't know your budget but he has some very nice 16" Blitz 01 for £500 negotiable and they are lovely and perfect fir for an mr2.

Wow - you're not kidding! R1-Rs are a tyre biased towards those who want to use their road car on track days though. I wouldn't use them on a daily personally. Especially in the winter. I have a mate who ran them on his Mk2 and the tyre life wasn't too clever (due to the aforementioned bias towards track use). The R1-R sits between the T1R and the R888. Nearer the latter than the former.

If you have staggered wheels, with the correct fitment tyres the latter will automatically be staggered as well. The importance lies in the fact that if you run the same width wheels all round (without spacers) you will have a front/rear track difference other than what Toyota designed for the car. The MR2 is quite sensitive to any change in geometry. You can get away with it (I did for 2 years on my first car without any issues but I was aware of it and drove accordingly). I had staggered tyres which is a compromise but preferable to not fitting them. It's still less than optimum though and the car will handle differently from the stock package. It will be subtle but still noticeable when pressing on if you're familiar with the OEM set up.

The recommended width/profile on the rear is going to be the issue with stock 7J rims - see below. Going to 16s will widen the choice. Personally I think it gives the best compromise between looks and performance and there is wider choice of aftermarket alloys in that wheel size. A 45 profile tyre is the way to go with 16s.

The only decent brands in 15" size still readily available at a sensible price seem to be Toyo Proxes T1-R or Falken ZE912. The rest are budget tat. Not a sensible choice on a MR2 (Nexen are not the worst by any means but they're still a budget brand and I wouldn't fit them on any MR2 of mine).
