Mitsubishi Outlander 2008 Diesel

Hi, this is my 1st post, so please be gentle with me.! 
I hav a 2008 Outlander 2.0 diesel, and the engine is smoking and knocking. I had someone take a look, who advised may need a recon./ poss new engine.
Anyone's i have found are hundreds of miles away, i live near Glasgow, so can anyone advise/recommend something a bit closer.
