So, after a few days of owning a mitsi galant that I got on the 'very' cheap, even though it is in brilliant nick and rides faultlessly, it does have a problem.

the gear box does a couple of things I wish it didn't.

after i start it up and change into second after pulling away, If i slot it in too quick, it graunches and doesn't go into gear until I pull it back to neutral and then try again.

if i try and stick it into second from first and slot it in after the gearbox oil has warmed up, and it does not complain. so might be a oil issue, but i still keep going back to a synchromesh issue.

and the second thing thats wrong with the gearbox is that once i have set off, and started driving, when i slow and stop for a junction or traffic lights and need to go into first, it just does not want to go into into first unless I really push hard.

guessing that last issue is a selector fork issue perhaps? or could it be something else.

that should be it for issue with it, as its excellent in every other way.

Seems pretty typical for many jap cars , my Skyline, 350z and Evo both did similar to this in cold weather , if its ok when the oil is hot then the issue isnt with the 'box. An oil change may help

Try Redline MT75/90 GL4 in it before you do anything else......I had very similar symptoms to the ones you describe in an Evo, the box feels like it's had a rebuild since I started with this stuff!

No coincidence, I use it in the van now, noticeably better.

How much does the box hold in a Galant? Cost me about £45 to change to Redline for the Evo. That's for 3 quarts from Trident circuit supplies at Silverstone

not sure, I'm getting two different value's.

on the v6 i think its 2.2 litres, and on the 2.0 its 2.7 litre.

I would rather try and get it done myself as to save a bit of money and gain a bit of knowledge.

but if i have to lift the car, then i cannot really do it as all i have is the jack that comes with the car.

anyone know what to do to change the oil in the gearbox?

The only tip I know about gearbox oil change is: Open the filler before the drain. Because if you drain it and then find you can't fill it....

aaah yes, hadn't thought of that.

and i have just googled it, didn't think it would be that easy.

but i don't have the pump thing to put the oil in the top of the box, so asked my mechanic, an he said that its gonna be 35 quid.

is 35 quid alright for a oil change in a 'box then?
