The wife's Z has finally failed an MOT on the blowing Y-pipe. Looking for a replacement, don't want to pay the earth. Don't mind if it's a bit louder than standard. Believe the rest of the system is OEM.

Any recommendations for suppliers or parts?

I'm pretty sure the Cobra Y-pipe is a direct replacement for the o.e. pipe, and it's stainless steel.

I've got Cobra exhaust from the Y-pipe back and it fitted with no problems at all, I was very impressed.

Ah, that's good to know, we've just ordered one!

Having got used to the racket it's been making, she's decided that it will be too quiet with the Y-pipe fixed and the standard back-box, so she's ordered the full Cobra Sport system. wink

Might as well chuck on some HFC's while you're at it. They'll be under the car with the spanners out anyway...

hehe slippery slope! She's pretty happy with the performance, though.

I think there are two types: resonated and non. Can't remember which is which but I had a Japspeed y-pipe and it made my exhaust quite raspy. Mind you I also had high-flow cats and a Blitz cat-back system too!

I persuaded her that the resonated Cobra would probably be loud enough for her - she was considering the non-resonated or the Buddy Club...

I have the middle and back bits, so not the Y pipe or cats, I paid £425 for Cobra Store, excellent service as the original bends for the rear section were well out, send me replacement bits which fit fine.

They can be a mare to fit if you do it yourself, best sent in to an exhaust place, I had issues joining the Y pipe (original) to the mid section (new) as the Y pipe has studs built in and they were rusted solid, had to cut them off with an angle grinder and drill the remainder out, if you replace the Y pipe as well you should be ok, as long as the cats come off ok.

She's just paid £700 from Cougar Store for Y-pipe, middle and backbox, very helpful people and they've thrown in FedEx delivery free of charge. Was posted yesterday when stock arrived, tracking system says it will be here today. Taking it back to the MOT garage tomorrow to get it fitted and the MOT sorted. They're a good local place and they've been really fair in the past, so don't expect to get ripped off for fitting.

No doubt the insurer will want a few quid extra for it, but shouldn't be a big deal.

It's bloody loud at the moment! Hopefully it's going to sound better with the new exhaust than with a buggered Y-pipe.

Only if you want the CEL to stay on permanently.

You'll need an Uprev (£400 ish) to re-flash the ECU and turn it off. In addition to £400 for the HFCs. Not a cheap upgrade!

Well, it's quieter than it was with a blowing exhaust, but it sounds bloody lovely! SWMBO loves it, and the insurance cost was token. Only downside was the amount of time it took the garage to get the old system off - I should have thought to tell them we didn't want it and it was fine to cut it up.

Glad you guys are enjoying it, I love the standard Z noise, but modified it realises the full potential biggrin Mitz and the guys at Cougar Store are brilliant, have used them for the whole of my Z ownership and wouldn't go anywhere else for my bits now.

As far as I'm aware that is incorrect. The HFC/Sport Cats are designed so they are still road legal (ie will pass an MOT) and thus don't trigger the CEL as they are still within tolerance.

Now De-Cats on the other hand...They should ideally have an Uprev done (you may as well fit a plenum spacer at the same time too), but you can get the O2 spacers which trick the CEL and don't trigger the light on your dashbaord. Come MOT time though, they have no chance of passing laugh The sound they make, especially during hard acceleration is well worth it though.

You are right about it being costly though, the fuel bill increase due to my right foot seeing more action is amusing!

I think this depends on the car; I had HFCs, Y-pipe and a Blitz centre section & backbox and even with O2 spacers my CEL occasionally came on (although infrequently).

Fair enough. I know my CEL came on for a bit, when I first had the decats fitted (integrated spacers), but has been fine since. A bit of the car getting used to it I guess. Cobra Y-Pipe and Nismo for the rest of the system.
