I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to this too as my bro's Mk2 has just started slipping (although his is a 16v engine).

Perhaps this might be better placed in Jap Chat?

To be honest with you, if the clutch isn't doing the job, then you should uiprate it to a better one. www.fensport.com do clutches for the whole toyota range, and I've never had a problem with them in the past. Some stock clutches will slip when red hot, and they will be fine when they have cooled down, but if you are intent on hooning, I'd reccommend an upgrade

Oh and you're quite right about the predictable on the limit. Was quite supprised myself at this after hearing all the stories.

Here's a short clip of my bro on his first trackday practicing a little sideways action

Not bad considering he'd only had the car 2 weeks!

MR2's are great!everyone KNOWS it-they just dont like to admit it.
Does sound like the clutch needs replacing/upgrading.
Before you shell out your hard-earned with Fensport check out-

The MR2 slides quite progressively and precictably, and definitely isn't as tricky at the limit as people say. The more you drive one, the more you get used to it too... However there are situations where the rear end weight does put the driver at a disadvantage; mainly when driver input causes huge amounts of very sudden weight transition, resulting in a pendulum effect-initiated spin. Drifting would be difficult.

The car does have buckets of grip though as well...

Going back to the original question, how much for a clutch change on one of these? Is it an engine out job? or can it be done simply splitting gearbox and engine in-situe?

They normally have to swing the engine from its mounts, at least that was how they did mine... Cost me 100 quid, plus the price of the cl;utch from fensport.

It was a little garage on an industrial estate in Ellesmere Port, on the Wirral. I can get the info for you, but it'kll be too far to travel I would imagine. Over the yearsd I've come to the concl;usion that a clutch is a clutch, and 99% of the time it will be fitted fine by any garage that specialises in clutches...

Just had my clutch changed on my Mk2 - It too was slipping from low revs in third.

Cost me £300 at a local garage.

The MR2 has cost me £900 in less than two weeks.

They may have leaned it out so you are using a tad less, plus you may be a bit nervous at the moment, in case something breaks! I know was, only booting it every now and then!

New wheels and tyres @ Gaz.

The car is so much better than when I bought it.

No tramlining, better braking and now a much firmer clutch (I always thought the pedal felt a bit soft before).
