Hi All,

Just had a call from Toyota who we had look at our clutch after it has become increasingly difficult to change gears (won't go into 2nd or 3rd without a fight) and have just been told that the Clutch has worn out completely and requires a new one (£865).

Does this seem reasonable? I may be wrong but I feel that after only 62,000 miles it should be ok for another 20,000 at least. Alright, I wouldn't expect it on a W reg car etc but something bought only 6 years ago should be more reliable than that surely?

I understand that the clutch comes with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty anyone think I may have a leg to stand on in asking Toyota to share the cost on this one?

Cheers!

Hi,
it *might* be worth asking Toyota, if the car has a full dealer history then they may replace it under goodwill, but I wouldn't build your hopes up. Certainly worth a stab anyway. Have you owned the car from new?. If it's second hand then it may have had a hard previous life, a lot of heavy traffic urban driving, for example.

I'd have expected a clutch to last longer, even the one in my "shedscort" lasted 80k before giving up, and that was partly in the hands of the Doris who's not the most sympathetic driver.

I'd have said the fact that they give a 60k warranty on a clutch suggests they have a good deal of faith in them. I always thought they were classed under "wear and tear" and not covered.

£865 seems very expensive. I think an Indy would be less than half that, Yaris clutches can be had on fleabay for around £80 up to £200 for a flywheel kit.

62K is not unusual for a car with some power, however a standard Yaris I would of expected 100k with gentle town driving.

Toyota wont pay

Go to an independant, id estimate £500

Ferrcrissakes, the car is 13 years old. Why are you expecting Toyota to pay for your clutch?. Mental. You may have driven it carefully, but someone else had it for at least as long as you have.It is perfectly reasonable for it to need a clutch at this stage in it's life. The age combined with the mileage points to low mileage usage, this tends to mean lots of around town driving. This creates much more wear and tear than pounding motorways. Get another quote and move on.

Apologies OP, just re read your post, I misread it as a W reg car. Still, an 07 reg car is old enough to need a clutch, and maintain you shouldn't expect Toyota to pay for your repairs. Its a wear and tear item after all. Find a cheaper quote.
