Hi All i am new to this so hope this is in the correct forum!

My boyfriend bought a RX8 on Monday and today he had to be towed home by the AA!
He was sitting in neutral whilst at traffic lights and he pressed the clutch down to place into gear and the car stalled for no reason. After that it would not start for a couple of hours (hence him being towed home)
Tried to go out just now the car started fine (idle was a little rough) but as soon as he pushed the clutch down the car went juddery as if it was to stall again! There was also a strong petrol smell in the cabin

If it matters the car is 2004 RX8 231 with 49k and full mazda service history. The clutch was also replaced less than 500 miles ago approx 4 months

We have had a look through the paperwork and cannot find any record of the coils being changed - could this be the issue??

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Sounds to me like your ignition needs doing coils plugs and leads. They need doing around 30k on these if not they can cause all sorts of problems. Sounds like urs are on its last legs get changed ASAP can damage engine so would advise not to drive it far like that. Get on the rx8 uk owners club they will sort you out. See where your nearest specialists is say Lycara sent you over.

I have had the same problem, in my case it was the battery, get a 70Ah one fitted if it is still on the original.

I think you have a few different issues going on here.

Firstly the stalling is something that happens after the ecu has been reset I.e by a flat battery. The car will need to relearn its idle then it will be ok.

If your also having hot starting problems then the engine has low compression and requires a rebuild. You may be able to mask the problems by getting an uprated starter motor and changing the coil packs, battery etc but ultimately it gubbed because the coil packs should have been done at 30k.

I had my rx8 for 3 year and went through the same issues despite maintaining it to the Mazda requirements so i feel your pain.
