A Toyota-badged convertible or turbo-charged performance version of the Scion FR-S coupe was under consideration, but was deemed too expensive for its limited volumes. Toyota will leave those ideas to the aftermarket.

How much access they have to Toyota's plans I have no idea. I guess we'll see...

I had a conversation with a Toyota dealer at Classics At The Castle just a few weeks ago and, for what it's worth, he said to expect a turbo model late 2013 and the cabriolet sometime mid 2014. Although, it's not unheard of for plans to change that quickly.

Dropping the turbo version seems like a wasted opportunity but I can understand them not doing a soft top as it would add weight due to them having to strengthen the chassis and change the handling which is the one thing that really makes the GT86 stand out.

They were quite keen on talking about the soft top at the recent Oulton Park promotion day.

I'd imagine the business case for the GT86 always factored in the upgrades and be surprised if they dropped them. They may have slid, and with that in mind they don't want people waiting. The Osbourne effect.
