Hi All,

I'm looking at a 2001 Celica 190 with 100k on the clock. It has 11 stamps in the book and 11 months MOT with no advisories. I thought the mileage and age shouldn't be an issue as it seems fairly well looked after, but a friend is trying to warn me off a car with this high miles saying the will be big bills with wheel bearings, dampers, brakes refurbs etc that will all need doing.

I don't do much annual mileage and the car is well priced so do I need to worry there's big bills round the corner or is it worth a punt?

Thanks,
Matt

you mate may be right may be wrong. I have access to 4 cars none of them is under 100k.

one has been running 280ish hp instead of the standard 200hp with no issues for the past 8 years.
wifeys has just hit 110k - no issues
my other car has done 160k - no issues. And runs and drived better than many modern cars ive been in
and my sons 101k - no issues

research the common problems and whether they are mileage related. Toyotas tend to be pretty robust. most things unless its catasrophic engine/gearbox/tin worm related are fixable.

My 04 140 is approaching 90k and I've just had front discs/pads done and it will need rears before winter.

Apart from that, I'm not anticipating any other issues......

Timming chain needs looked at @ 100k on the 140. Not sure about the 190. it's just an inspection though.

Check the alarm works. They have a habit of going off for no reason and the wheels buckle very easily.

Check the recall for the fuel filler has been done.

Check the high lift engages at 6000rpm, the lift bolts break on these although they are easily replaced.

Brought mine with 110k a few years ago.

Needed new battery, front tyres, disc & pads all round, rear spring - so all in all general wear and tear and low maintenence. Even the timing chain is fautless - rivals need the chain and tensioners reset and renewed.

Had one for 5 years or so, just sold it last year.

Bought at 80k, sold with 140k on it.

Only thing i ever had to replace on it was brakes, discs, pads and calipers. Was bomb proof, that car had been all over the country on random trips.

Was gutted when the wife traded it in on a civic type r (not that we got much) i wanted to keep it, it was so good.

I had a celica they a nice car but I must say the v tec is much better especially the rev range and the way vtec goes I found celica slow after 100ish unlike the v tec which keeps going.
I have a s2000 now and love it but if I needed more seats would of got type r for engine but the celica looks better then the civic.
There are good bargains around for the celicas

If you put a vvtli next to a vtec the toyota will win. Youtube corolla t sport (which is supposed to be slower than the celica... which it isnt. It is the same) vs type r. Ep3s.. fn2s b16 b18 k20. They all lose. Everytime.. and I am aware some die hard vteccers will get a tad upset by this and say theirs is faster.. it isnt. Believe me, it just isnt.

Load of old rubbish. There will be you tube videos the other way round, you have no idea of the actual mods, the driver might be rubbish, crap tyres, bad launch etc etc.

VTEC is renowned for a reason, the stats don't lie, and put the stats of the EP3 Civic Type R against the Corolla and it beats it hands down.
