Celica 140 steering wandering

Hi,

I've just driven a low millage Celica 140 BHP (35k 1 owner 2001 FSH)and the steering felt really light and was wandering all over the place under acceleration, is this a Celica handling characteristic or does it suggest something amiss or worn on the car?

We've got a 2004 1.8 (so a post-facelift but basically the same I guess) and it certainly doesn't do any of the things you describe. I would check things like the front track rod ends, bushes, wheel bearings etc.. for free play, if they seem OK then perhaps have a good check around for signs that it has hit something?
