2002 Corolla Verso clutch\gearbox problem?

Hi

I've got a 2002 Corolla Verso 1.8 VVti with a manual box. A few weeks ago, when in gear I could hear a grinding noise when moving (noise when away with clutch depressed). Yesterday the sound got a lot worse, the gearbox started whining and even popped out of gear when accelerating. I've got the car booking in to be looked at. My question is, should I be braced for the worst (a new gearbox)? Opinions would be greatly received.
