I have been reading about the problems with rotten front chassis on MK2 MX5's at less than 10 years old...

Now my mate has just had his 2003 Mazda 6 fail the MOT on corroded sills! A bit of research tells me its a common problem.

I though rot in cars was a thing of the past and 10 year old Mercedes!

Erm, No.

Cars that are currently in production as we speak still have corrosion issues. In most cases it's fixed by simply stuffing a load of gunk into a hole somewhere and hoping it seals it.

It's just science mate.

Approx a year ago I was shown the underside of a 2007 MX5 by my friendly local mechanic.

They said they hadn't seen a five year old car with that much rust on it in years. For clarity it wasn't bodywork but all the sort of corners/hardpoints/brackets underneath (excuse my iffy terminology). All going rusty.
