I have an imported Mitsubishi Galant.

Had a couple of problems recently so went down to local dealer service department to get their diagnostic tool plugged in to upload the stored error code data so that I could determine what was up.

They told me that as it was an import their MUTT II diagnostic tool won't talk to the ECU.

I asked how they service the cars then ......... "best guess mate".
What's your best guess about the two symptoms then ........... "haven't got the faintest idea mate".

Great service!

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions about getting data off an ECU or some other ideas? (Will post in Jap Chat as well).

Sounds like balls to me.
Are they really trying to tell you that Mitsubishi use a different type of O/s on imports to uk spec that their code reader wont read?
Theyre pulling your pudding imho.

btw, i used mitsubishi's code reader on an import Fto to diagnose a faulty tiptronic gearbox temp sensor, worked ok on that car.

Most new cars are using OBD-II. There are a couple of other systems, such as CAN used on the RX8, but you'll find most stuff made after '96 is OBD-II. You can get OBD-II software that you can run on a laptop in conjunction with the right cable and see what's going on in real time. Take a look at both www.obdii.com and www.obdii.org for more info.

Yes, but to do anything useful with Mitsu's you need a Mutt II. And RX8? Have you landed on the wrong thread?

Fair enough, I stand corrected, I wasn't aware Mitsubishi had their own proprietory system. I was just stating that most modern cars conform to the OBD standard and tools are available to interrogate the ECU and pick up fault codes.

Anyway, it sounds like the dealer is playing the typical 'oh, it's an import' card. Mazda dealers are similar, but if you're assertive with them they can usually be persuaded that they are in fact the same car

Phil, I know some of the EVO's have OBD-II ish available but I think they're a bit off standard. I seem to remember a dash mounted display that could tell you all sorts of nice stuff (like EGT's that high boost runners should watch like a hawk) but were model specific. Like your car BTW. I bet you surprise a few people with that.

Noble's use MBE ECU's that A) don't do OBD-II and B) don't say much else as they're locked out.

Back to job in hand, I used to get the 'import' line with my EVO-6. They're all made in the same factory FFS. I don't think any Galant's were made outside Japan. I may be wrong though....

Phone around a couple of import specialists to see if they can help you...

Many thanks for all the input guy's and gals.

I agree it's a Mitsy Dealer attitude towards imports but also Mitsy themselves protecting their local dealer network as apparently they chip the MUTT II to only accept chassis numbers that were officially imported by the dealers.

I've now found a work-around. Don't know if this is the same for different marques but I can earth the MUTT II pin number 1 (one) on socket connector under my dashboard, switch on ignition and the diagnostic codes for any faults stored in the ECU flash on my TCL warning light on the dashboard.

It came up with a 'code 52' which is the ignition coils.
