What sort of cost would be involved in putting a sports exhaust on the MX5? and how would it effect my insurance? Also does it make THAT much difference?

Has a marginal (if any) effect on insurance in my experience.

Performance increase is noticable on my car but I guess it really varies from vehicle to vehicle.

Sounds good too.

What sort of price would I be looking at for a sports exhaust? Could Fish fit it himself? he is good with car stuff

Thanks very much

Would I get the money back on resale do you think? Not sure how long I will be able to keep hold of it.

Time to talk to hubby methinks

If he won't go for that, that you mentioned above, is there a cheaper option?

I'd save your money with regards to the manifold, the JR doesn't make enough difference to warrant it. I know this from first hand experience. The JR 'zorst makes a lovely noise but it's expensive for what it is. That said, all JR stuff is expensive for what it is in my experience. I wouldn't say a cat bypass is particularly worth it either on an MX5. They run pretty rich from the factory so it will lead to a sooty bumper over time and a slight rasp to the exhaust tone. I have a high flow cat and a bypass pipe and have done back to back comparisons. The difference is less than 2HP. For the sake of 2HP I run with the cat. You also won't pass an MOT with no cat on a new car, which yours is.

Phil.

Ive always wanted a S/S exhaust, but will wait until my existing one goes before upgrading, hopefully by then I will be able to afford it

Fish has said no to all the other stuff, but just something that will make it sound nicer. Due to the fact that I may not have it in a years time, and I still have 18 months warranty on it, so don't want to make that null and void.

So what is the cheapest option?

Different pipes certainly sound different too.Size & diam of back-box & tubing.,I guess a brass instrument(like a trumpet etc)would be a reasonable analogy.Perfect compliment to a S/S system would cerainly be an uprated airbox/cone,to help with the breathing airflow, they can also make quite a difference to engine sound,& fairly cheap+non engine-invasive.-So shouldnt upset Fish or resale

They do look cool with a dual system, here's a photo of mine:

Mine are the Flyin' Miata turbo duals, have a look at www.flyinmiata.com for more details. The only trouble with duals is you have to trim the bumper on the passenger side, so it's not a reversable mod. Fortunately FM do a single exit system too that sounds very similar.

My hairdryer is having another hairdryer (turbo) fitted under the bonnet on Saturday, I have a standard powergraph for a before and after comparison.

Me thinks it might be a few more bhp difference than one or two, I'll let you know how the grin factor is going after the weekend.

Out of interest which turbo/kit did you go for? and how much extra power/torque will it give?

I bought the kit still on another car, just removed it today, fitting starts early AM tomorrow. It's an HKS with a Garret T25 or T24 not sure which, piggy back ECU, fan overides, elcetronic boost gauge, trust oil coiler, hoofin great big SS exhaust thats too nice to stick on a car. Some Cusco coil overs chucked in too all for £800. I tried one out with similar spec running 5psi & dyno'd at 185 ish.

AP22 Data logger power graphs for comparison to follow very soon
