Well I just picked up my MX5. (Leave the hair dresser comments out!).

Anyway the zipper on the rear window has a slight issue. The tag on the slider thing has snapped off. And it's snapped the loop off the slider. Is there anyplace where I can get a replacement slider from?

It's not a new car....so I bet they'll happily sell me a whole roof to replace the bit.

Common problem, mine's done the same thing on a roof only 2 years old. I've just chucked a tie-wrap (or zip tie if thats what you prefer to call them) on the zipper 'for now'. That was 6 months ago

Sorry, just re-read. I missed the bit about the loop on the zip slider having gone south too. You may be able to get someone to replace the slider - someone who has recently replaced a hood would be a good start as (s)he may have the old zipper. Try the owners club forum at www.mx5ocforum.co.uk, people are replacing hoods frequently so someone will have something. Other than that, you can get a new rear screen panel for about £100, or a budget hood for £180 odd. You can go up to £550 for a mohair hood with a glass screen that would probably outlast the car. Fitting isn't rocket science provided you have a reasonable selection of tools.

This isnt exactly what you want, but if the zipper is useable at all, give the entire length of the zip(works for ANY sticky/stuck zip) a good rub up & down with a pencil. The graphite in the lead works like a 'lube.A cobbler told me that!& it works well!
Go on lots a cobblers comments, get it out of your system

A 2ft by 2inch length of piping laid across the outside of the window when you take the roof down, so that the window curves round it, will stop any cracks appearing in the meantime.

Assuming it's a plastic window, of course

I'm currently pondering how strong Araldite and an old key ring would be......Or possibly solder....

Not quite sure what bit you mean, but if it helps I kept the whole zip thing from my old plastic window.... its sitting in the garage i think about to be binned...

Editted to add, just went and got it, but is just a zip with nothing else, I may have kept other bits though, i'll take a look when its daylight...

Thats what we do on our MGF.

Cant remember what its called but its the round hollow foam rubber you get to go over hot water pipes. Then covered with cotton (just being pedantic not like you actually need to )

Far easier than zipping the window out everytime with the associated problems with the zips etc

A pool noodle (foam exercise doofie), £2.50 or so from a sports shop does the same.

I hadn't thought about the issue of putting up the roof in traffic.....

Anyway, apparently they are about £6 from Mazda. A guy on the MX5 owners club form has even provided a part number!

Cheers!

Yeah if you open it and forget its there itll roll down the back of the car and onto the road

If your flexible you can reach around and grab it though as long as you made it long enough in the first place
