I'd quite like to do some canonball-esque trips in the not-too-distant future.. but my next car will hopefully be an FD.
Is this wise? would you rex owners trust such a frail beast on such an arduous trip?
If not, what else? A VXT would be great, but they do have pittiful luggage room, although it'd be ok for long weekends, a week or so might be a stretch (bearing in mind girlfriends luggage!!)
Supra seems obvious choice, for space and monumental grunt.. but any more interesting ideas?

FDs aren't all that fragile. You're just buggered if something wankel-related goes wrong out of shouting distance of a rotary-wise mechanic!
A well maintained FD with decent mods would easily hold it's own with exotica more than 5 times it's price. Both reliability and performance.
I did the trip to Le Mans and back this year with no hiccups at all apart from 18mpg and a brief pull by the BiB (just a check-up though).
If the round trip was going to be > 2000 miles I'd bring the stuff with me to do an oil change mid way as most of us change at 3000 miles of normal driving!
a Supe ro a Skyline would also be a good choice as there's actually room for luggage in one. The FD has limited capacity for baggage!

I went down to the Italian Lakes last year with Mrs DC and my mate and his Mrs, me in my Tuscan and him in his RX and guess which one came back on a trailer. The Tusc snapped a conrod and chucked a piston through the block but the RX never missed a beat and there was some hard driving done.
I now have an RX and am hoping to drive to Austria next year again with my mate but two RX's this time and have every hope of driving back!

Some-one say Long distance,overland?ooh-sir! gotta be a skyline,when those babies get moving at speed, aint no stoppin' Plenty of space too.Obviously I'm biased but its true.Hi-speed,Long distance,continent shrinkers-thats what they were built for.

Danboy: more than welcome.. although I suspect you'll have an FD before me.. as mine is reliant on a good bonus.. and you know what happens when you reply on things like that!!
p.s. nice looking tubby you've got there.. would think that would be good for covering some ground!
skyline's aren't to my taste, despite their obvious competency in these matters...

Just watch the lack of filling stations on the Autobahns, at silly speeds & a lucky to get 8mpg at 120 plus you'll be needing to stop less than every 100 miles unless you want to risk it to the next station (which isnt there when you need it)
Hence why a BMW 330D came 2nd last time round.
Its most embarrassing being overtaken by Audi Tdi's when you think 140mph is really fast on the Autobahn, it's not fast for any great distance in a gas guzzler.

Amount of petrol used could be an issue. Normal driving returns ~17mpg, blatting ~15. Constant 140+ mph? Probably ~10!
Worse than that would be temps as you'd be on boost a lot of the time. The standard cooling system (rad and i/c) might not cope too well so uprated rad and intercooler would be advisable for safety.
Of course you're into modding quite a few extra bits if you stick a bloody great FMIC on there - ECU + mapping, injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, relocate battery for starters!
Cruising at a ton is fine though as you're not on boost.

not that i've tried it, but i'd imagine sitting at 140mph+ or whatever would lose it's appeal after a while... ?
yeah, the novelty of being able to go flat out would be good.. but I think I'd soon hanker for a bit of the twisty stuff
full boost and ammount of fuel used etc at those speeds for hours on end is a scary thought though!!

you can't get VXT's for £15k though.. just barely an NA one. same with the elise S2 no?
as for the NSX... that would be amazing.. but I think one for £15k would probably only have 3 wheels, 5 cylinders and some hegde wedged in it's rear bumper..
