Integra Type-R buying
Discussion
I'm going to look at an Integra Type-R tonight. What are the main things to look for?
It's a UK supplied car, 1999, black, AC and alarm with 79k miles. Seller is asking for £7k. It has not had its cambelt change yet.
Are there any independent Type-R specialists in Surrey?
Cheers, Alex.

Top Gear mag month before last had a page on what to look out for when buying a 'Teg. Can't remember any of it off hand though. Might be worth digging out a copy if you can.
Iain
If someone can scan it and post it here within the next 30 minutes, I will send them a case of beer!

Right, back from the test drive.
The car seems generally sound, my only two concerns are a knocking from the rear, the seller says it is an exhaust heatshield and "they all do it", and a slight whine from the transmission at parking speeds; is this because of the LSD?
Hi alex
As a Intera owner myself I can say that my lsd does not make any whine at parking speed and there is no knocking coming from the rear of the car.
But 7k seems a very good price
Check for s/h as some of the services are very expensive I belive the 75k one is one of the more costly ones. Also check to see if the clutch has been done this is due around the 60k mark.
If you dont buy this one keep looking as you will not regret buying a Teg It brings a smile to your face every time that Vtec kicks in.
Hi Alex,
I have read that after 60k the shocks are past their best and need replacing. Not sure about this but I definately read it in one buying guide before i got mine . I suppose it depends on the the car.
the handling is the best part of the car IMO genuinly fun to drive once you get used to it.
Mine does not have any knocking noises or wines at low speed.(it does have very noisy bearings at tick over in neutral though)
ps stay out of that v-tech zone if you want an economicle car. Im getting 132 miles to a tank at the mo
Must change gear before 9.5k revs

I went to see another one today and...I bought it!
No whine, no knocks, just an extremely well looked-after Teg.
Can't wait to pick it up.
Excellent. Saw this thread when it started but did not have time to offer a reply.
I would have walked away from the first one swiftly too ('they all do that sir' - yeah right, bye).
Good buy! All the panel-gaps look even, so should be a safe buy. A well-sorted one is absolutely fantastic, you will be grinning for months.
I was going to post a lot of what RobC has - no knocking and no whine on mine. But he's done it already!
ON the S-plate, the service interval is 6k, and the cambelt should be done at 72k. A T-plate, I think, moved onto 9k, but with the same cambelt service. So a 79k car without it done suggested a slightly careless owner - why run an engine that specialised while risking a cambelt failure???
Shocks - depends on how it's been treated. Ditto bushes, which will probably need replacing first. One that's been on track will definitely be worn by 70k (mine's needing some new bushes at 60k).
Oh - pesty - by bearings at idle in neutral do you mean the injectors - they sound almost tappety and are easily audible while stationary. And 132 miles - what ARE you doing to it - my commute is largely B-roads and roundabouts and I can still top 200!
